Suckler cow trade at Sedge on Sat was as flat as a pancake.

Most outfits selling well below the cow's cull value and on top of that the calve would be thrown in for free in real terms.

Bull trade also very sticky, Char bulls sold well but apparently ( did not see them sold ) every other breed was very sticky and many bulls not making much more if any more than their on the hook value.
Should have bought them and split them then 😂

Are many people going to be seeking winterkeep sheep to eat there precious grass next winter?

Every blades going to be a prisoner with fert prices where they are.

Be better carrying heavier covers of grass over into springtime?🤷‍♂️
They might as well let sheep eat it while it’s there better than the east wind taking it in March , earn a bit of money off the sheep men but the frost and east wind will give you f**k all

Depends where your based I suppose.

We are normally applying N to winter crops early March as they are starting to grow again.

I believe many areas the grass hardly stops growing. Winters seem to be getting milder and dryer. Wouldn't say we had a winter this year in NE Scotland.

If store lambs look cheap will probably buy again though. 🤷‍♂️

Farmings becoming more and more like gambling. Just the stakes are getting higher.

When the cattle run out they will then, just hope they don't leave it to long before it's to late
Prime cattle will be very short next summer for a few reasons:

1 : People will cut out the cake/grain so they will take a lot longer to be ready

2 : Cull cow numbers will by then fall off a cliff

3 : There will be very few barley beef bulls being done by next winter and those that normally come thru the plants in 12/16 months time will not be there but instead run on as steers.

I tend to agree but do you think it it will smash the £5 barrier and end up something like £5.40/50 ppk or not??
I think supermarket beef shelves will have to start being empty before they will really let the price lift dramatically. They will be banking for now on short term increased supply as people start dumping cattle as they can’t afford to feed them. The majority of cattle are costing as much or more now to feed than they are putting on their back in value so they won’t be staying any longer than absolutely necessary. Once they’ve gone they will soon run short and empty shelves lose footfall to competitors faster than been 50p dearer. Harvest time is when they will rocket by my crystal ball

Someone in another thread said they need another 100p/kg on finished cattle to cover increased feed costs.

Don't think that included increased fertiliser costs for grazing or making silage.

I've worked out we need another £300/hd to cover fertiliser price increases.

Haven't ran any numbers for feed cost increases. Feed 500t of our own barley, plus buy in protein in the form of pot ale and maize distillers. Think my brother had protein forward bought for next year. Can't remember price.

Come harvest if you have say 1000 ton of grain in the shed worth 350k if you sold it will surely concentrate some minds on buying cattle to feed it to, especially if the cattle prime price is as low as it currently is!

Come harvest at this rate most of the cattle supply until Christmas will have been killed early. If wheat ends up at £400+ which it could well do their will be no chicken or pork either. We will all be skint vegans 🤢

I absolutely agree with all the ^^^ above.

However the GP will not be buying beef at current levels because they simply cannot afford it.
