In the late stage of a pandemic, agreed.

New Zealand proved lock downs do work, in the early stage of a pandemic.
They work in a small population where you have very little initial infection, in a big population with a lot of initial infections due to lots of people entering before testing was available its shown they can slow spread but never stop it

It depends on the scenario. At an early stage they might be helpful in eradication. When a disease is endemic, they can only be a delay tactic to buy time. One hopes China is trying to buy time for vaccination.

Lockdowns need to be hard & fast or they are less effective.

ie Italian sking resorts seeding all Europe with Covid

On the other hand Sars & Ebola have been kept away by lockdowns & I presume others.

But China is wasting its time & everyone elses now.

Do lockdowns work? if so at what price? A ruined economy? maybe a few Covid deaths were prevented? How many died as a result of being unable to get access to hospital care for other ailments?
It worked for Sars & Ebola, how would life be now if they had spread around the world?

How much money & lives saved if covidnhad been discovered earlier with a complete lock down in the affected area.

Agree though once it is endenmic & there is a vaccine, just forget lockdowns.

They are both very different though, iirc symptoms appear very quickly and are far more severe making it easier to detect people with it thus avoiding it spreading

SARS 1 was easier to contain than SARS 2 because of the fact that symptoms appeared at the same stage as infectiousness of the host. Therefore, when they did contact tracing, and then isolated people as they began to have symptoms, they were able to nail it down more quickly.
