I quite understand the sentiment, and would expect leniency at every level of the judiciary.
But advertising this is stupidity at an epic level.
It's encouraging folk, implying that it's not really much of a crime.....

I notice, on news reports about the cost of living, those interviewed lately seem to have been able to spend money on tattoos and hair jobs.....
And while i wouldn't see people in the UK hungry - principally cos they might come round to my house and nick summat- i do wander how much is down to skewed expectations.
Is it just me or does it seem like everyone interviewed on the telly about the cost of food seem like they could do with losing a few stone? Can they just not find any thin people to complain about it?

Why would you do that when you could nick much less bulky items worth much more?

How much gear do you think you could get with a chicken you've half inched from Aldi?
This is very common practice. Meat and coffee are the most stolen items. You’d be amazed how many steaks A determined drug addict can hide on them. They are then sold either in pubs or door to door on a nearby estate for quick cash. I remember years back a shop we were working on the manager caught a drugged up woman stealing chickens. The same shop we had to remove the ice cream freezer as people were leaving their used hypodermic needle’s in there amongst the loose ice creams presumably as a protest to have been caught

Overeating and weight gain is largely stress related.
Some people have incredible stress to deal with living in poor housing paying high rents with dodgy neigjbours

At the risk of digresing (can't spell) There are dire warnings coming from international speakers on food scarcity, when will our government wake up. we are still exporting our grain stocks like mad!!.
WB
That will be the grain farmers trying to get a few quid for their crops won't it? If someone overseas wants to pay more than the domestic market, why not sell to them? Or should the government be buying it to store?

There was a story last week from usa where cops chased a woman and baby who stole nappies
Ended with two deaths inc baby in car crash
That is taking it too far

The sole responsibility for those deaths lies on the thief. The moment the authorities stop enforcing the law due to risk to the criminal is the moment we begin the path to anarchy.

UK started down that path some years ago.

I bet its unreal the amount of stuff nicked out them super markets especially with them self checkout things .

Local Morrisons I went to yesterday had those glass electronic gates when you leave the self checkout area.

It’s not a regular place I go but I got the feeling they had beefed up security measures. Wouldn’t be surprised to see more of this happening everywhere over the coming months.

People don't shoplift food "for the money" anyway the idea is preposterous.

How on earth would you shoplift enough food to make it worth selling it for a quick buck?

Shove 20 steaks down your trousers?

The supermarkets waste £millions in food every year.
Bit of a tangent, but on the 20 steaks down the trousers….

was sat waiting for sleeper train in local town. Just me on the platform, then 2 tracksuits joined me, train comes at 22.25. Pair of them were having a discussion as to how to get back to next town, but didn’t understand why the board said Euston, thought it was maybe in Fife.
After a few minutes the bloke came over and asked if the train stopped at arbroath, I said it would depend if anyone was getting on, plus you can’t sneak onto the sleeper due to number of staff present and lack of seats. He threw his arms up and swore, and at that 2 packs of Tesco finest silverside roasts fell onto the platform.

so it does happen!

off tangent but on a similar basis got on a TGV in Avignon headed for Lille and the tunnel, luckily our reserved seats were empty but noticed several complaining that others were in their seats. Things were getting a bit heated and it was obvious there had been a major cock up in the booking, as I thought. Then as the doors locked, Gendarmes appeared and panic ensued as they lead at least 20 ticketless people off and that was from just one carriage!

I travelled through Austria and into Italy by train backalong.
Austrians do everything by the numbers, not a spot of litter, everyone happily playing by rules.
The minute we were over the border, the paint was a bit faded, and there were uniformed staff shaking down ticket dodgers. It couldn't have been more different or obvious.
