Anyone milking sheep south west ? just dont hear of many doing it , my cousin is looking for a supply , very established cheese maker . any excess can be mopped up by neighbouring national cheese maker .

Thanks for all your replies , at the moment they are shipping in IBC's form the midlands i think he said , have given me a fair few contacts to look at now , they have been making unusual cheese for a long time inc sheep and buffalo , real artisan small truckles of different cheeses , they sell a lot as corporate gifts along side the main business in farmers markets ,
sheep cheese sells well , and has difficulty with regular supply , they could take a fair bit ,as the next door national supplier can take excess for their sheep cheese production

Oh really, thats a shame. They had that fancy parlour but did feel like a bit of a vanity project and it wasn't going very well!

I spoke to them about share/contract farming the land. But they sounded like hard work, especially when they kept going on about their "very high expectations of animal welfare". I didn't think we would get on.
So do milking sheep get the lambs taken off them at birth and then fed on Lamlac ? Is that not expensive? Just curious

Like cow dairies they can be reared by nurse ewes, dump milk, powder, sold to someone else to rear or despatched at birth.
I fenced a deer farm in Italy many years ago and the neighbour would come round and be amazed at our progress. We went round to look at his place and he was milking ewes by hand, straddled over them standing and milking into a bucket. Lambs were still with them. We thought it looked hard work and he said surely you do the same in England? He said he can get £90 worth of cheese from each ewe as well as rearing her lamb. He thought we must be mental not to do it.

Have you seen the farm in NZ which milk red deer?
There always a good number milk sheep orphans in Exeter on Friday of late. Would have been 50 plus in Friday just gone.
Maybe give Kivells a ring to find out where they come from, or I think @gone up the hill might buy a good few so maybe he knows where they hail from??
