How low would BPS have to go before you stopped claiming it?

A quote from farm minister Victoria Prentis saying " 10% of BPS claimants receive 50% of the money" ok not great but we all know how BPS works on a acreage basis. She then went on to say that "33% of claimants receive less than £5000" I couldn't believe it, why go through all that ball ache and risk for less than £5k and why didn't the RPA put in a minimum claim size of £5k and cut their workload by 33%?? All a moot point now of course but I had no idea 33% of English farms were small 50ac farms (assuming she's got her facts right).

As BPS reduces at what point would you stop claiming to reduce cost, risk and admin burden??

I think for me it would be a couple of thousand....🤔

My pain threshold for dealing with defra and the RPA is 5k, if i cannot get SFI or anything else to add up to it then i am out.

And that is from the position of a below 20k claim before the cuts, that is them only managing to pay me twice in Dec for BPS with no changes and a whole load of other pain over the last 20yrs, like having inspections with no issues only to be fined when the BPS arrives but they know you won;t challenge it as it backs up the following years claim. My time and heath is worth more than that

That's what's wrong with the system , non ag should get non .

one of the reasons for many small claims was that m becket when she was agriculture minister allowed small claims for permanent pasture horse paddocks ect

when the payment becomes delinked the claims process will be much simpler
based on your average claim from 2020 2021 and 2022

As I understand it you cannot avoid the rules - therefore you cannot reduce cost and admin.

HMG doing a fine job of increasing the Risk for every tax payer in the UK, yet they are paid to do the complete opposite.

HMG is not fit for purpose.

There is a minimum claim of 5ha of eligible land iirc, below which it costs more to administer than it pays out.
No doubt plenty with substantially more entitlements than that would be very happy to see that limit raised, and the money redistributed to them.

Where do you set the limit though? I vote for 120ha minimum, with capping for anyone over 130ha.👍

I am sadly not surprised. There was a big hoo-haa when the minimum area was discussed a few years back. Was it not 2ha or 5ha.

It costs something like £3000 or so to process a claim, so all claims below that level were costing the country money.

Sort of, there are SMG's outside of BPS but it's more the fanning around with a metre wheel measuring hedges and ditches etc plus the worry if you got it right plus a few hours a year waiting on hold on the phone and any sudden shocks if they decide that you've got it wrong. (Do you fight it or do you just think I'll take the hit it's not worth it...)

I’ve noticed that! 3% penalties in the claim most years regardless of wether I’ve had an inspection or not?!

Are NT farmers ?
They seem too think so. They have taken back the entitlements I had on NT land, claimed it themselves then had the cheek too ask me for 75% of the claim value as well as that was the previous arrangement when I did claim the BPS. But when you’re a blundering whale of an organisation like NT that’s so inefficient it’s unbelievable you need too secure LOTS of funding from somewhere!
