I'm about half way through his latest offering, to summarise, he hates farmers, especially livestock. He hates all corporates, too much money, he makes lots of assumptions and is wildly inaccurate with some of his ag knowledge, for example, apparently your all spreading fert at the wrong time of the year, he states you spread nitrogen in the autumn and winter as you aren't busy then and can't be bothered to spread it as the crop requires it! Thats why it all gets washed into the rivers.

Talks a lot about the rest of the world, little so far about how to fix anything other than getting rid of all livestock and the world going full plant diet, recons that by doing so it'll reduce the land required to grow food by 75% and we can re wild it all..... lots of numbers blah blah blah......I'll keep you informed.

Hates corporates but wants to get rid of farming and have all human food produced by industrial processes.

Does he imagine small family owned protein vat production facilities?

Liking the summary. So it’s just livestock farmers that are spreading this fert in the winter then? Or is it arable/vegan farmers too? If he hates corporates who will make the factory gloop? What a strange man.

Be interesting to see if he makes the same false claims about being booed and jeered like he did after the ORFC when nothing of the sort happened. He got some challenging questions and some people disagreed with him so he had a hissy fit and told porky lies!

Well, he will get called out quickly enough if he is economic with the truth, as the Groundswell Organisers video the various speakers... :)

Possibly the OFRC does too...?

It'll be interesting to see if he's added anything that reflects the current world events, he's obviously written it pre rising energy and food prices and the war in Ukraine. To be fair to him, its difficult to disagree with his stance on water course pollution from farms, I'm doubtful on his claims that ag is a bigger polluter than the water companies, its easy to find fault in all walks of life, its better solutions for the problems we need and less division.

He has absolutely no concept of the unintended consequences of his aims.

Remove all livestock, and what would happen to insect numbers, and the numbers of species who feed on insects?
We’re already accused of causing a massive decline in insects which suspiciously tracks the decline of mixed farming in the lowlands. As livestock numbers reduce further I wonder if the lights will go on behind vegan eyes as to their role in the changing pattern of wildlife in the countryside.
The man has a book to sell, whoever is his agent/publicist has done a very good job and should be hired by the NFu immediately!!

And these water companies are doing what to solve the problem?

I would guess, lobbying government and I wouldn't be surprised if the line isn't, with the cost of living crisis, if we had to do anything about pollution it would cause water rates to rise, so we better leave things as they are at the moment!

What they should be doing is borrowing the money for a long term, getting the problem sorted and then paying it off over a long spell. Unfortunately short termism and corporate greed rule.

I don't fancy reading it much now. He knows a bit about ecology and biology but he knows very little about agriculture and has very little feel for farming and why farmers make the decisions they have to.

Feels like a book just to fill a book deal and have a bit of attention from the bbc

The first chapter was quite interesting on soil, obviously from his ecology background, but overall there wasn't anything earth shatteringly new that we didn't already know, sure, he's aiming at lot of this at a particular audience, I really don't get the narrative he pedals which insinuates farmers deliberately set out to destroy the soil and environment which they rely on!

He doesn't actually want to engage with farmers properly anyway and reach a common ground. He wouldn't be able to be the enfant terrible then and that's his brand which sells him books and gives him telly appearances.

I'd be surprised if he has ever grown anything commercially or had to fix anything himself. Which means he can never be wrong about the stuff he pontificates is wrong - its quite a good position to be in for him

Which is the real shame, a collaborative approach is the only way we'll ever fix some of the environmental issues we face.
