Do I spray my spring barley?!

Evening everyone.

I sowed my own spring barley on the 20th of March,

I called in on it tonight, to see whether it needs spraying or not…. It does…

However, it’s got the barley awns poking out of the top of the leg!! I was amazed, it’s only been in the ground a few weeks!!

Dad always said that spraying when the head was on the way up the leg would have a big impact on yield… so I should leave it alone… but the weeds will only get worse, and there’s a long time before the combine will be in the field…

What should I do…?

If you're talking herbicides, get something on before the ears appear.

PGRs and fungicides not necessary, however.

Really? We use PGRs to try to keep it standing and to increase tillering, and have enough disease even with fungicides, be we are in the (generally) damper West. Will be going on with first pass this weekend (mid-April drilled), having rolled it again last weekend.

Do you have an agronomist? Some herbicides will be ok to use, although they might not write it on a recc🤐, whereas some will harm the barley at that stage iirc. It will be a full on mess by combining if left, and the competition will cost you dearly in yield (@£300/t!).
I’m certainly no expert though.
