Someone advertising on Facebook with 150hp tractors, man and tractor out at £38ph + diesel.

Seems awfully cheap.
Tyres must be getting around the cost of £1.50 per hour+ to start with
With fuel you are talking over £50/hr which seems not far away. This has been discussed before but round here contractors use farmers fuel. As long as they trust the supplies then seems fairest. Long haul at high revs costs the farmer more, not the contractor.

I've just costed my main tractor - 140hp, 13 years old at £38.80 per hour including fuel at 15l / hr.
So £38.80 - £16.50 for fuel at £1.10 / litre = £22.30 for you and your tractor

I would say that's nothing like enough, how much do you value your own time at?

Minimum wage is £9.50 so even if that is all you think you are worth that is only £12.80 per hour for the tractor.

A 140hp tractor could have been in the region of £60k 13 years ago and will be 90-100k now.

So that's 4687 hours to payback your existing tractor or over 5800 hours to cover the likely price to change yours if yours is worth £25k used

It's the age old problem, it doesn't seem enough for the guy in the tractor but £50/hr is a lot for a farmer too.

I basically don't even look for work with tractor and driver as you can get it at the rate you want. Although I do have a job coming hauling a trailer but they can pay or it won't be done.

I bought it second-hand for £25,000 and I've allowed £2500 / yr for depreciation. In reality it's worth now at least what I paid for it and if I were to change it it would be second-hand again so I don't see my arbitrary depreciation figure being too far adrift for my circumstance. I've costed myself out at £15 / hr.

I think you might get a shock at what a replacement 140hp tractor might cost you, bearing in mind 140hp 13 years ago is probably now 160 - 180hp to get an equivalent.

Not to mention if you are in the second hand market and high hours you need to factor in the odd big bill if a gearbox goes or something similar. I am not knocking buying a good used tractor and running it hard for a long time but you need to be able to replace it when it comes to the end of its life and at £7.30 an hour for the tractor its not enough

Hell is ploughing now £37.50 acre??

But on the fuel, just work out the extra costs of the fuel v last year on for jobs and increase your rate pro rata + other increased costs as well of course.

I was chatting to a chap the other day, his grandson is working for a large veg grower, 6 tractors on bed work etc and burning over 3k of fuel per day between them and they will have 6+ weeks of that fuel rate!

I can’t beleive £2 hour for tyres can be right.i was working on £1.50 a clock hour on my avatar 20 years ago
nick...
£2/hr for tyres
Im working on £7k a set and my tyres last around 3500hrs. Of course with flint ground they would last a far shorter length of time
