looking for a BB X bull to cover salersX heifers, want to add a bit more shape but keep easy calving, if the dam was Saler would be ideal, Hereford or maybe even BSH would be second fiddle.

Some BSH cross bb in the farmers guardian, I could send you the number if I had a look

Surely you aren't going to use a BBx bull on heifers, before testing it on some older cows first.

Unless you are an extremely competent and experienced stockman.

You reckon 25% blue in the mix of the calf over a salers heifer would give any trouble?
I wouldn’t want to say I’m competent but I can’t see it being an issue, I’d be more concerned if the blue genetics was in the heifer then in the calf .

As above, my take would be that it's too much of a risk. I think folks tend to too 'greedy' with heifers. Far better surely to give the heifer a nice, easy calving and then back in-calf quickly, possibly with something a bit stronger at that point. Get an easy calving Hereford or BSH, forget the BB bit.

Put a saler bull on heifers and breed your own replacements. Have been down the bb route, yes a saler will calf anything but wouldn't go back to the days of suckling lazy calves just to gain a bit of 'shape'. Use all angus terminal now and dont regret anything bulls away 13 to 16 months @ 700kg and heifers around 640kg@23 mths. Best of all no disbudding.

I think your plan might work but it also might just add inconsistencies like some following the saler lines and shooting out and others following the blue. Also from experience with a blue x lim bull the calves will be all over the place with no consistency in colour or conformation. I think a lim x saler would be better but on heifers I’d go for a saler I’ll will set the heifers up for life to whatever bull you want

I know the feeling we’ve just sold the best calving saler bull that produced nice shapes because we had too many of his daughters to bull so needed a new bull

Yea totally get what you mean and they are not for everyone but there’s not many other breeds offer the full package like a lim. We find they cross well with a saler. Yes they can be a bit more jumpy but 99% are fine

im working on the basis that dairy x blue heifers calve down just fine, mine did to hereford, i did have to pull a few but that was because there tight at the back rather then the calves being big, ive always found British blue calves pretty small
