Good News in the pig trade

I contract rear outdoors for the guy who xxxxxxxxx has just brought out, been told today that I’m now only rearing to 40kg outside free range and then there off to be put in sheds in there agisters sheds in Yorkshire so I’m told. Big changes for me overnight. We knew it was coming he couldn’t carry on as he was.
Where have they suddenly got all of those sheds from?

if you were Evil minded, which surely non of us are, you could be forgiven for thinking that the pig market has been gerrymandering. Keep an eye on the egg market and poultry market it too could follow.
I think that you are correct.
However there is a highly successful and widely copied US model- started by Pipestone vets in Minnesota, which is the opposite of what we are seeing here with BQP, xxxxxxxxx etc.
In general, a group of farmers jointly build a 10,000 sow weaner production farm, then they get numbers of weaners according to their shareholding, which they might finish in their own buildings, on b and b farms or even sell.
The unusual thing is that the vet practice manages the sow farm for the farmers.
Is it successful? Well Pipestone now manage 400,000 sows I think and other vet practices have copied it, notably Carthage in Illinois.
So, some of the biggest operations in the US are actually farmer owned, rather than being corporate ogres.
Not sure why I posted about this as for various reasons it couldn't be copied here.

Your model may not be able to be copied but the reason for this change is the same here now. So what hybrid model would work. Ideally needs slaughter capacity like Denmark.

Yes and the Danish farmers co operatively own that slaughter capacity. Sadly, co operation often doesn't work here in the UK. Our model of PLC's favours the growth of the likes of xxxxxxxxx and Tesco. In Germany, the climate seems to favour large private businesses, such as Tonnies.

Does anyone have a link to the details of the purchase?

The poultry market could follow!! ALL of xxxxxxxxx chicken is sourced from crown poultry all of crowns feed is sourced from crown milling. Crown is a subsiduary of you’ve guessed it xxxxxxxxx. It’s already happened. Someone who’s opinion I trust told me xxxxxxxxx are looking to further expand there pig herd.

xxxxxxxxx know that most independent pig producers would rather not deal with them and when they are in a position to stick two fingers up to them they will. Therefore, to ensure continued supply they will have to own pretty much all of their production, or pay a lot of money.
They have history though, about twenty years ago they had a big dabble in pig production, didn't like it and sold it to a Cumbrian farmer, although he had deep pockets they weren't deep enough and eventually went bust.

Not sure , I’ve just been told to rear the 2800 I’ve got which he still owns to fat weight 70kg + , then the next lot in will be have in hurdles for a week, then let out as normal behind single stand Electric fence but only to 40kg then load up and send north.

Not sure about anywhere else but around here they've scaled back expansion of their outdoor pig herd, with a focus on improving quality of what they're doing. There have been fields fenced and ready that they've now taken down again without a pig touching grass. To say they don't have the best reputation with people they rent land off is an understatement and the weaners coming off the sites haven't been the best according to the transport drivers, not to discredit the people managing on those sites of course because it's not easy when workers are going through a revolving door. I'm sure the plan is to expand long term though, like with any big business, as this recent buyout has shown.

Their model of many of their breeding farms being wholly managed by them with employed labour is always going to deliver worse results than only using agistors like BQP, where the people have a degree of “ownership” and a lot of financial incentive to perform well.

I'd rather exit farming than deal with that bunch of crooks.
