How much discount for a demonstrator?

Was wondering how much discount you might expect on a 240hp demonstrator tractor over brand new? Been quoted, and the difference isn’t as much as I had thought/ hoped!

It's ten years since we bought ours but the dealer got a Cashback from the manufacturer when it's done 300 hours demo work which was seven grand on a 59000 tractor

In my over 35 years experience of working in agriculture in Australia ( I am 56 & grew up on a farm ) I can honestly state I have NEVER seen a “demo” tractor . . .

for most of my career, you order a tractor you want to buy & about 6 months later ( or more ) it turns up . . .

No answer in my opinion depends on situation. We used to buy demonstrator combines from a dealer a long way from us so all his demo customers got a new one and then none knew the discount. We have also bought a demo baler but we were the only demo and it was old stock, so already a year older than new and a couple of price rises later.
These deals worked for us, but never bought a demo tractor as the discount has never been enough because they are usually top spec and brand new to our spec is usually cheaper. Manual verses electric spools for example.

All you can really do is price new and demo and take which ever deal works for you

Lack of supply is a good point. The tractor hasn’t done any hours yet. The dealer is proposing £16 per hour that the demo will have done over the price of a brand new one, and it is envisaged that the tractor will do c. 300 hours before I can have it.

sounds reasonable really - i would be upset if my tractors costed even close to £16/hr in depreciation - historically less than half that

A demonstor used to be a factory spec model ,bog standard and no extras,,only when somebody bought did it get the toys added extra spools, wirring conections more lights ,different size tyres.
By the time it's been round umpteen farms and had every driver from 18-80 trying it out and then been back in the workshop for a full service, replace parts and valeted ,all those costs are going to add up .
The discount is soon wiped out.

We brought a fendt couple years ago, first people to demo it, then it sat in dealer yard a couple of months befor the deal was none, come out with 35-40hours on it, we got a £3k deduction of new price and the warranty extension from 3 to 8 years.

For under £5k tell them you'll have a new one now.
What kind of muppets will be putting 300 hours on a demo tractor by pulling too big implements, too fast just to kill it?

At least when I buy a used tractor I know it has been around the village 3 times!
Will it really be demoing for 300 hours?

Probably a demo or two, courtesy tractor whilst another in for warranty work and perhaps short term hired to pull a mounted 5m Sumo Trio up hills for a week  All the drivers knowing they won't be owning this afterwards.

The one we had was used to do the slurry tanking and some mowing on the dealers own farm and then was on his stand at a couple of shows where we saw it. Came to us with 50 hours on the clock and we ended up keeping it. Dealer said if agco asked tell them it's done 300 hours

I bought a Same silver 130, £25,000 saving £3,000. On condition that if another customer came and wanted a demo within the next 6 months, we'd to let it happen. Two came and had a ride up and down the road on it, but it never went away to any customer.

It had problems and Same had to come out to it, turns out it had the injectors from a '110' fitted, we were warned to tell the Same guy it was on demo if he asked.

Probably because they know if all dealers don't offer a demo machines then farmers don't expect to get one. Must say that the local duetz dealer has a few demo machines at the moment. Plenty of ex demo imperments were around when dealers had stock.

But to answers the op's question in this market no. My Mate sold his 1000 hr tractor for the same price he payed brand new 4 years ago. You'd almost have more bargaining power if you ordered a new one and waited.
