from what I can see calf trade is not as good and very variable/unpredictable compared to last year, good calves to cheap considering the price stores are making IMO

You've flushed the radiator internally so I'm assuming You've cleaned the outside? Can you see through it ,are the fins flattened and blocking air flow? Try running it for a few days without the thermostat fitted , won't do any harm. Water pump could be knackered without showing any external...
Put the strainer post further into your fence line then use plain wire as @jamj said and put some rails between the strainer post and the anchor post/stake thats used to anchor the plain wire too, bit like a box strainer idea
