    Up Horn/Down Corn

£60 for the barley and £550 for the finished bull - not a great deal different to today but there was £250/hd dole if you did the job right. No dole now on cattle.

Help me to help a fellow member

I’m sorry the guys marriage has broken down especially if kids are involved. However as has been said a healthy marriage doesn’t break down because you aren’t left a house - richer or poorer and all that… one plot off a farm doesn’t seem much to give up if X gets the farm/farm business. I...

How long does it take to recover from a nervous breakdown?

I would (and have done myself) speak to RABI and utilise their ‘red umbrella’ scheme. You can get some free counselling which will be quicker than going to the GP as NHS funded counsellors are over subscribed. The counselling per se may not be helpful but the counsellor may be able to give you...

Dealing with depression - suicidal thoughts - Join the conversation (including helpline details)

My little girl (nearly 5) sat me down the other night for a chat; ‘Daddy, I’m sorry, I don’t want to be a farmer anymore, I want to be a teacher’ I am just proud she is having healthy independent thoughts. For me, they can do what they want as long as they are happy doing it. Satisfaction in...

    The House Cow

I hate milking out cows by hand, however my fingers and wrists are buggered so I find it quite painful after a bit. It is a satisfying job, however milking out Limousins is neither therapeutic or satisfying, especially when the old bitch kicks the bucket or jug over when it’s three parts full🤬🤬🤬

Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Pigs were culled in April, fairly early days, they didn’t send enough staff so we had to help, there was no choice. Cows we just penned them up for them, I didn’t want strangers chasing them round the fields in their last hours. In any case as I recall you couldn’t leave an infected premises...

Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

We had a lot of pigs culled out, for about two months after they were culled I could still hear them in the sheds, very weird. On the cull day I had to help cull the bacon pigs, they would let about 8 out of a pen into a passage way, nip them up tight and have three loading and three shooting...

    The House Cow

We have had the odd black and white cow to help out with twins etc sometimes have to milk them out to keep them right. I just run the milk through a muslin cloth and cool it down slowly to fridge temp. It’s brilliant in coffee and porridge, coffee with milk straight from the cow is a totally...

Livestock SFI - what would you like to see ?

I’ll keep it simple and as per request. There should be a mixed farming standard, it could be tiered so if you just graze cattle or sheep or put one crop and the rest grass it would be a lower payment, but if you had cattle sheep pigs and chickens and a number of crops and grass you got paid a...

Dealing with depression - suicidal thoughts - Join the conversation (including helpline details)

It’s not nice, but as has been said, be grateful you are out of it. I had several years of it but can’t be shot all together as we have kids together. My ex’s latest escapade was to tell the kids we had parted whilst taking them away for the night despite us agreeing to tell them of our...
