    Malting barley shortage

Given up on planting this way (East Midlands). Got 30ha planned but absolutely fed up with the maltster/ AIC behaviour. Will catch crop then 1st wheat. Hoping everyone cuts back 10-20%. It would benefit farmers more and we’re not the ones that started playing these silly games.

    Deductions

I sold it for £236/t for Nov/Dec movement last October. Moved in February (no carry agreed and several broken pick up commitment dates) and they paid me the feed barley price on the day. (every sample retained tested at 99% germination but alas that counts for nothing).

    Deductions

Any one beat this? £114/t deduction. For 96% germination……. and the grain company picked it up a month later than contracted……. and we tested it all at 99%.

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

I really like this- but it doesn’t change the in-balance in the relationship currently. There has to be a counter- terms and conditions from the growers. It’s embarrassing that the AHDB or NFU haven’t bothered with this over the years. NFU Sugar has shown how a growers collective leads to a...

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

Digital passports aren’t going to improve this situation. They rejected the grain at 96% germination. I had a sample and it was tested at the ‘lower grade’ malting barley home. Both of these results were 99% germination. Now the independent tests took 27 days to be tested and made it...

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

I kept samples. They tested at 99%. The independent testing took 27 days to be carried out which can’t be right? The whole system needs changing as it’s simply not right or fair. Even if I ‘lose’ I want to highlight my case so maybe changes can come? I don’t think the grain company can liable...

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

I told them it had to go in Nov- Dec. I had fertiliser coming in and I also needed the cash flow. No agreement of carry. No extra payment for picking up a month late. Several promises to pick up and then not. Last load went it at 99% germination to a different home which backs up the sample...

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

I take your point but this really can’t be allowed to keep happening. The germination tested 99% everywhere, they took 27 days to get the sampling done and they picked it a month later than the two month contract window.

Taking on a grain merchant (the AIC cartel)

Hoping for a bit of help and guidance. We had a Nov- Dec malting barley contract that got partly collected in Feb. The December loads that we loaded had no issues. Some Feb loads failed for germination. Same barn, same land grown on. Rejected loads tested 99% germination at the feed house they...

    Sugar beet price 2024

Not too sure you caught Dan Green on BBC Farming today on 9th (yesterday). When asked why he isn’t even paying the same as last year because the market is at record highs he stated that some of the input prices may have dropped a little so why should they. I don’t think everyone at BS is...

    Beet 23

Yup. Plus Cantley IT system went down yesterday. British Sugar were hosting the Sugar Industry Program at Wissy yesterday showing how efficient their flagship factory is……..

    Sugar beet price 2024

The ‘new growers’ chat from BS is interesting. Hundreds of farmers have left the industry over the last few years due to obvious reasons but mainly low prices. Do you know how many new growers like you have taken beet back up even at £40/t? 7 (seven) The increase in area has come from existing...

    Sugar beet price 2024

There have been hours upon hours of negotiations over months and months and months. You wouldn’t believe some of the ‘tactics’ used by BS. This looks like it may drag on with BS refusing to come back to the negotiating table. The reason they’ve done all this is because 1) they want to pay as...

    Andrew Guest.

Always an absolute joy to deal with. Straight up, informative and a great team he had put together. Always had time to chat and would help you out every time. What a shame.
