    Expensive mistakes?

Also - 10 inch row spacings are fine. Mine are 12 inch and we don't see any yield reduction. (to caveat that, I suppose you could have a problem with a very thin canopy that hadn't tillered well) If you buy a 3 inch borgualt point to begin with, this brings it down to 7" between the rows which...

    Expensive mistakes?

I think you can get far too hung up on drill choice. For DD flexibility you want a disc drill and a tine drill ideally for different situations. But start with a tine if you are going to use just one. I started by buying an old moore unidrill and adapting our existing Horsch sprinter with...

    Drilling grass into wheat stubble

OK thanks, much appreciated Drill is a horsch sprinter although we also have a Wevaing GD. Gut feeling would be to use the sprinter if drilling into stubble+chopped straw although seed will be in 30cm rows with narrow DD points on - too open for grass I think. Could put 5" borgualt goose feet...

    Drilling grass into wheat stubble

Thanks Ollie. I am thinking: 1 Combine wheat, chop straw 2 Straw rake, to get chit of volunteers, wait 2 weeks 3 spray off volunteers with low dose glyphosate 4 broadcast herbal ley mix (grasses, clovers, herbs, chicory) seed with drill out of the ground to get even coverage of seed (nervous...

    Slugs

Rolling is your first defence. We roll at 90 degrees to line of drilling, and then with line of drilling. At 90 degrees, rolls press into the rows. I believe a 90 degree criss cross pattern prevents slug movement more than 2 passes at shallow angles. We always put Sluxx on after OSR at 5kg/ha...

    DD into fresh turkey muck.

We direct drill cover crops (some with wheat and other cereals as part of the mix) direct into stubble + chopped straw + chicken muck. Chicken muck gets the crop off to a good start and have never had problems with scorch.
