I've bought a couple of Welsh ram lambs this time after one getting at my ewe lambs last year. 60 out of 70 ewe lambs have been served in 2 weeks at this rate the ram lambs will be in the market next week.
We lost 11 milkers in 1996 due to lightening strikes the cattle were sheltering under trees at the time you could see they had tried running away but just dropped metres from the tree. Brought many tears that morning.
Very true but isn't it the job of hcc to prevent such volitiliy in the market. I would have been nice if I'd met someone on the stand who was positive about Welsh lamb and could see why it deserves a premium. I didn't want someone telling me its a race to the bottom without any ideas
I spoke to the chap at the hcc stand about what they were doing about promoting lamb and counteracting the bad press we are getting. He just told me the lamb job is not going to get any better you just have be more efficient. Its a shame he didn't have a 20% wage cut like some of us selling...
I had one similar early on. I Fed the lambs off the ewe twice a day and put aveeno body cream on her teats straight after, she was fine after 2 days. Jennifer Aniston swears by aveeno but don't know if she uses it on her nipples.
If it does survives put a rubber ring on it send it fat. We had about 10 lambs like that from the same ram a couple of years back. Its not much fun spending time trying to mend them only to have to knock them on the head later.
We had a 275kg Jersey steer break its legs as it jumped a cattle grid we butchered that and it ate really well. by rights only partners in the business are allowed to eat it. Sent skin, bones and tag on fallen stock. Real shame you couldn't have made something of it.
2 of my Jersey x bb graded as R4Ls yesterday which surprised me as some pure Herefords I sent last week only graded as o+. You never know how they will grade. You can always go down and ask them to explain themselves.
