Pioneer (amongst others) had a breeding program a few years back specifically looking at varieties for double cropping which they called "Alterna". The idea was to find sunflowers and maize varieties that matured fast enough to allow them to be planted after barley etc. I had a go about ten...
Its interesting that you are using boron on cereals. We are extremely deficient in it, in rape and beans we see can see to the inch where we miss spraying it. However I have been told cereals are unresponsive to it so I have never tried it perhaps we should? On cereals Zinc and copper get...
No still can't see it. Current "events" are making shocking headlines but most people will barely notice. So much of the UK's rural policy is tied up with moral crusades of one sort or another its going to take more than 10% on the price of people's shopping baskets to make a difference. Empty...
I can't see the general direction taken by every UK government for the last few decades changing. In fact I think that the general trend of not supporting productive agriculture will speed up in the future seeing as the only thing holding back change has been EU membership. Expect more rules...
We have Clearfield and SU tolerant varieties over here in France including some "100 day" types that might be suitable for the UK. The real market for these types here is for second cropping after grass silage or even barley/winter peas etc . You need warmth though and a bit of luck to do...
When I was still at school in the 80s Dad bought a Steiger Bearcat with a Big Cam 855. 14 litres and "only" 225Hp. Its probably still running somewhere. Never felt the same about the Case 4690 that replaced it.
I agree about the lack of builders etc. It's not logical when so many are on the dole, though I have noticed many successful tradesmen never seem to be that keen on making the leap to grow their business taking on staff etc. Not saying they are right or wrong just an observation.
Taking...
I could have worded my post better. I do actually agree with you about the quality of life and house prices here, a little goes a lot further when houses are cheap. Its a great place to live just a harder place to forge a career.
Those that find work locally can do well but many young don't...
At least those that want to work in the UK can. I think many young people here would love to swap places with those in the UK if that were possible.
Here there is almost no work available for a young person and when they get a job the national insurance and tax is considerably higher than in...
Does the UK have apprenticeship schemes? They work very well here and I would rather find a youngster who is keen enough to learn to go to college than take on someone who thinks they know it all already.
I find a ploughed in crop of winter beans treated with kerb the best reset button. Or failing that we are fortunate that we have the option of sunflowers or maize, autumn plough and a sprayed off cover crop before the grass sets seed is often as clean as you can get.
