I've found exactly the same. The Wheat we have this year after AB6 has been waterlogged since October and full of takeall. The way it looks at the moment, I think we will be lucky to get 7t/ha.
We are about 10minutes north of Bishops Stortford. I like the idea of owning the stock, just so I have control of the grazing. My sheep experience is fairly limited, but I will likely have someone who knows what they are doing to help me out.
I think the main thing stopping me at the moment is...
I don't really have a budget on how much I want to spend. We are on heavy ground, so I am a bit nervous about investing in kit, then realising the sheep don't work and being left with a whole load of fencing etc. There aren't any sheep in this area, so getting someone else to graze isn't really...
What percentage of your Autumn drilled ground will you try and get a catch crop on? And when do you think it is too late in the season and not worth drilling catch crops?
Yeah get rolled and had two doses of pellets, both after drilling. I was expecting a lot more slug pressure though and the second dose of pellets probably wasn’t necessary.
The Wheat actually established pretty well. Drilled with the Claydon on 17th October and glyphosate applied with the pre-em 10 days later.
Picture taken this morning
Not very well in the end. I waited about 2-3 weeks before drilling the catch crop after Rape and tried taking out volunteers with the stubble rake, but the stubble rake either didn't do enough or more volunteers came through later which then outcompeted the catch crop. Basically ended up...
We have run a 7R as the main cultivation and drilling tractor for the past 3 seasons and have had no problems at all. As stated above, the only negative is the small fuel tank.
Are you buying sunflower seeds from a garden centre? And if so what is the germination of them like? I’m reluctant to pay £4+ a kilo from a merchant when they are £1ish from a garden centre.
Yeah we will be baling the oat straw. The plan is to use the Claydon to drill the wheat, so I'm hoping not to have a cover with too much biomass so that the Claydon can handle it okay. What mixes are you using in catch crops?
