Difficult these days to make footpaths accessible to wheelchair users (v. important in my book), but at the same time discourage access for teens on scramblers.

SFI was supposed to help the environment and reduce pollution/emissions.
By reducing/handicapping food security by paying people £800/ha to not grow food, the imported food covering the gap is actually worse for the planet.
Exactly this.
There isn't a bottomless pot of gold sat there ready to pay for SFI, which is why the government is so keen on getting privately-funded BNG schemes off the ground, so that SFI can be phased out.
I think today's published 25% limit is less about food security and more to do with how much money is in the pot to pay for the whole of SFI.
The pot soon runs empty if a whole farm in every parish goes into SFI.
