For sure you can see the return and cash flow benefit (as long as the money arrives), and the 25-28t/ha varieties for home trade are a fine line, important for us in the seed trade to find the varieties that are going to deliver 38-40t/ha which stack up for all and also keep field generations...

Neither variety is going to yield heavy though so lots of area and input seed required to meet orders. Big money being offered so the temptation to keep piling them in is huge and pressuring the home trade like you wouldn’t believe. Cara not a particularly friendly variety in terms of long term...

Was suggested as fairly accurate by Irish visitors to our breeding station in Holland this week, also the report of 20% of the EU4 crop still to harvest (although I hear that is weighed to some extent by more fresh and flake crop than processing area)

w Poly bags at the end of their shelf life ripped into the crate, boils my p1ss…….even worse when you see there’s 3/4 different varieties in there. Add in no packaging to put your produce in (no paper bags across the whole of our large local Morrison’s yesterday) and it just sums up the poor...

To some extent yes, regional variations for sure and also planting date has made a difference. Coming off the back of the 2022/3 seed which was the smallest run crop in my experience it will make this years seed rates look worse than they actually are though. The profile of crops in Europe are...

As an employee of a seed breeder I’m going to suggest that blight resistant varieties are the best solution 😁

Huge competition for growers from processing factories is part of the reason for the reduction in seed area (land clean enough for seed is also an issue - becoming a real challenge with higher grade UK seed production too). That has combined with a very hot summer in Western Europe at the point...

End of greentop for non-storage growers always puts some pressure on the trade, admittedly I was not expecting it to drop to current levels though. Restricted ground clearance in the North West in July/August due to very wet conditions has created a bit of a hangover for crops that would...

Maybe was some regrowth that wasn't frying due to lack of maturity? Have seen a fair bit on my travels as well as plenty of second throws of tubers due to ineffective Fazor application (or growers not bothering as conditions were not right anyway..............) Expecting to hear more of this...

Potato sales after the melt down of last week.

It looks like retail fresh sales/bag sales could be in for a boost with this lockdown, but whilst you expect chippies/restaurants to be much more prepared this time compared to March you still feel that there could be a further downturn. Hopefully not. Fingers crossed we do see the resurgence in...
