Not really good enough on their part.
I'd look at 20% Protein minimum. Probably get better growth on a 21 or 22% Protein though if fed at 3Kg/head/day, albeit it will cost more per tonne, but worth it
You'll need to make sure of the protein level when fed straw and at that age. Speak to a nutritionist from the Mill and tell them its straw only as the forage.
I agree with you, however we dont have a great amount of room, and would just be moving it somewhere else to rust further. The problem has been in our thoughts for a number of years. Neither Dad or I have the capability or want to restore machinery. Unfortunately time moves on I'm affraid.
We have an old lean-to shed on the farm which needs to be taken down in the new year. It currently houses a Bamford (I think) Wuffler and a Deering Binder.
Both will need to be rehomed preferably, or scraped as a last resort.
The Binder has been in our family since 1917 when my great...
You said they were the opposite on what they were supposed to be - 1 was supposed to eat less than the other, how was that measured on the hill Farm?
If they do well in RFI in a shed, it means they will eat less dry matter on a hillside
Or to simplify it - Residual Feed Intake EBV will give you the animals which grow at the optimal rate, but by eating as little volume of Dry Matter as possible.
Also - I have called it Residual Feed Intake (RFI) - this is what i know it as, (the american name) in the UK it is called Net Feed...
Thought id help with a few of the posts about feed conversion and Stabilisers being measured for this, however this is not the case.
There are 2 measurements being spoken about in the posts - most sound like Feed conversion.
Feed Conversion/Feed Conversion Efficiency/Feed Conversion Ratio...
This might shed some light on a few of the questions above, especially on the genetics of the Stabiliser composite

Took the words out of my mouth on the outwintering on forage crops, an absolute no brainer considering the cost of diesel/time to spread the dung and feed them. Its the Arable equivalent of some good hill ground :)
Got this 6000i Speedrite energiser installed last spring on an area we can’t get mains to. Have the on/off remote control and have been very pleased with it when fixing/adding wires to to circuit a relative distance from the energiser itself. The energiser is supposed to to 60km of fence line on...
Yeah have saw them doing this a lot in America/Australia. Possibly a bit harder to do here as less availability in the individual Raw Materials? Dont know could be worth a look, I just meant a "pre-mixed" dry cow powdered mineral, also usually a lot more cost effective than in a lick bucket...
