Situation Vacant Full Time General Farm Worker

We currently have a full time position vacant for a general farm worker to cover jobs between our two farms in North Herefordshire. We have a 180 cow conventional dairy farm milking twice a day on a 14/14 herringbone and feeding with a Keenan wagon. Tasks include but not limited to; relief...

You must have a pretty good inspector - our SA audit lasts 8-10 hours!

    First Time Farmers Ch4

Statistically they are right; private schools are academically better than state schools. It isn't an opinion, it's a fact backed up by league tables. Is it right? No, and everything should be done to bridge the divide. However, abolishing independent schools and character assassinations of...

    First Time Farmers Ch4

Bit of a massive generalisation. I went to the local minor public school (the same one as one of the first time farmers) basically because all others bar one school in the county were generally a bit sh!t. Nobody at my school had a chauffeur. The mix of pupils was pretty broad thanks to assisted...

    Classics Earning their keep.

That little Massey is a beaut. Doesn't look like she sees much work - looks mint. Our 135 is still scraping sh!t at the dairy. Not looking quite as shiny. Won't post pictures for risk of a visit from HSE. The old Dominator still going strong.

Header for 1987 Claas Dominator 78s

Yeah, ok, it's old. I remember my grandfather buying it. However it's all we've got and still works. The header however is worn through. If anybody knows of one going, or where I might find one a heads up would be most appreciated. Have done the usual farm autotrader/ebay/google searches but...

Basic Payment Scheme and Organic Entry Level Scheme

Apart from the bureaucracy of organic certification inspections..... A personal bete noire. Seriously though, doubt the paper trails would be much shorter with OELS.

    AHA Succession

Hell. Hadn't even considered this - thanks for bringing it up. My old man keeps avoiding the subject of succession - I don't really even know the terms of our two tenancies. On top of that, I get paid a salary and my OH is a GP (so earning slightly more than a tenant farmer). Going to look into...

How would you manage a 32ha holding, 3 crop wise?

Any AD plants near you? Could contract grow some maize if you didn't want to rent it out.

    Late payers

Had a long day yesterday and a sh1t day already in the office trying to stretch the milk cheque across all our suppliers - particularly the £50k/year in rent we pay out to one of the richest landlords in the country. Obviously in the wrong game. Don't seem to be any cashflow problems in contracting.

Ever tried selling anything to Tesco or another supermarket for that matter? No, thought not.

In what farming practices can one outsource a large portion of labor and still remain profitable?

What sort of capital do you have to kick off with and what are your thoughts on conventional vs organic? Wouldn't consider either a "side business". I'd say both require 24/7 attention so for a dairy herdsman for example (unless you would be doing it) you'd need someone who does more than just...

OMC? Pheonix still going. We're in partnership with them on a box scheme called Skylark.

In what farming practices can one outsource a large portion of labor and still remain profitable?

Our main customer is a large organic box scheme based in London but now delivering nationally. We also supply a wholesaler, have our own small box scheme and supply the local fruit and veg shop. All work really well for us - however, that is it. You're right that in order to go any bigger you're...
