I sorted a McHale 991ber (no L - not sure of the difference?) for a customer/mate a couple of years ago. McHale advised they don't make these control units any more, but might be able to get them repaired. As you don't have a unit, you might be best contacting RDS MME Ltd in Dorset, who...

Cut a few acres with one of these..... IIRC that long spring supports the cutterbar when it is in the operating position and the hydraulics are raised (eg at the headland etc). The breakaway spring is the smaller vertical one just behind the RH linkage pin.

I had a 1968 135 that was still original when I bought it, it didn't have the aluminium grab handles, but it did have the aluminium headlight housings....

I usually find this happens when the disc jams in the work and goes in shite, tightening the nut up a bit more in the process........
