KUHN has announced a new 12 metre model has been added to the popular OPTIMER range. It is the first 12 metre machine to feature KUHN’s unique STEADY CONTROL system which maintains a uniform working depth, even at higher speeds and on undulating land, regardless of soil conditions. Product specialist Edd Fanshawe explains:
“STEADY CONTROL exerts equal pressure across the full 12 metre width of the machine. This means the discs all cut to an equal depth even when the ground is undulating because the OPTIMER compensates for ground contours by adjusting the ground pressure across the machine’s five sections.”
The 12-metre machine can also be run at up to 15 km/h whilst maintaining a consistent depth across the width. “This will help larger farmers...

Sexed straws now account for 80% of AI Services (Northern Ireland) Ltd's dairy semen sales.
The company's breeding services manager, Ivan Minford, told Agriland that sales of sexed semen have doubled over the last three years, with milk producers now happy to use sexed bulls on both heifers and cows.
“Sexed semen provides dairy farmers with the widest range of breeding options. In the first instance, it gets around the issue of producing dairy-bull calves, which have a very low market value," said Minford.
“It is also an approach to breeding that allows more beef semen to be used within a herd. In turn, this is adding significantly to the value of the calves that will be sold off farm.
Watch Episode 1: Land Management Plans and the Sustainable Farming Incentive Pilot
Written by The Team
A land management plan brings together various pieces of information including maps, field records and details of how the land is being managed.
Farmers and land managers can use them to record environmental changes on their land.
Through tests and trials, we wanted to understand the role they could play in our future schemes. In the Sustainable Farming Incentive pilot, we provided farmers with 3 different land management plan templates. Each template was developed through tests...
UK poultry farms are increasingly being challenged by the permitting requirements to reduce the concentrations of ammonia leaving houses. About 65% of the total nitrogen intake of a bird is excreted, with 17% not digested and 48% not utilised. When litter moisture content is 25 - 35%, microbial action readily converts faeces into ammonia.
Best practice is to limit ammonia emission to maintain dry bedding, with good internal air recirculation, air change helped by heat recovery, and much better climate control. With the correct installation managed correctly, reduction of ammonia can be 30 - 50% on the UK standard broiler emission factor (0.034kg-NH3/place/yr).
However, the regulators are looking to stabilise the ammonia...
