A new approach which increases the focus on preventing incidents of livestock worrying rather than simply punishing those responsible is needed to help tackle this ongoing issue in Scotland’s countryside, says Scottish Land and Estates (SLE).
The SLE says that alongside increasing the level of fines to act as a deterrent for anyone who allows their pet to worry livestock, there is a need for better education and the matter to be taken more seriously to prevent these sort of incidents happening in the first place.
Stephen Young, head of policy at SLE, said:
“Our members are fully supportive of responsible access for everyone, including their pets.
VÃderstad presents the new Marathon 15/25 point for heavy clay duty
Väderstad introduces the new Marathon 15/25 tine harrow point, which provides guaranteed working depth in heavier soils. Together with the wider Marathon 25/35, the tine harrow Marathon family is now complete.
The 15/25 is a further specialization addition to the Marathon 25/35 introduced in 2018.
Dont be fooled by the smaller size, this is an extremely tough point. It has a narrow bottom of just 15 millimeters with a pointy shape, which means that it can maintain the working depth even in tough soil conditions with heavy clay. It has an even higher soil penetration ability than the Marathon 25/35, says...
CHAP launches CropMonitor Pro â a new digital service for predicting crop pest and disease risks
CHAP is delighted to announce the launch of a new digital service – Crop Monitor Pro. It is designed to help growers and agronomists predict the likelihood of pest and disease outbreaks on their farm.
CropMonitor Pro extends the DEFRA funded, long-standing regional risk evaluation service (Crop Monitor) which was first launched in 2003 by Fera Science Limited (Fera). CropMonitor Pro is a significant advancement on that service by providing field-level risk prediction for a range of pests and diseases affecting winter wheat, winter oilseed rape and...
The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is calling all organic farmers and growers to write to their MP to express their concerns about securing mutual equivalence between UK and EU organic standards.
The NFU is urging organic farmers and growers to highlight the significant impacts British organic farmers and growers will face, without regulatory alignment on organic standards.
A spokesperson for the NFU said:
“At the end of December 2020 we will leave the transition period and the terms on which food and drink are traded will change.
“Unless equivalence for UK organic standards is secured as part of the UK-EU negotiations, British organic products will not...
Agricultural contractors and their role in the farming industry
Written by
Will is joined by Ian Maddever, an agricultural contracting expert, and Charlie Yorke from NFU Mutual to talk about agricultural contracting, how the industry has changed and the role it now plays in the farming industry.
A campaign group for farmers is planning a second protest in Parliament Square in Westminster in response to the return of the controversial Agricultural Bill in the House of Commons.
The group Save British Farming (SBF) is planning to hold a second demonstration against the bill which they believe will lead to the introduction of lower food standards.
A “socially distanced” tractor demonstration is planned to take place next Monday (September 28).
The protest centers around the proposed introduction of free trade with countries like the US and they believe this will lead to ‘the opening of floodgates to lower-regulated food’.

For much of 2020, the volume of pigmeat leaving UK abattoirs has been lower than earlier recorded levels, a contributory factor in the firmness of farmgate prices, according to the latest market commentary from Quality Meat Scotland (QMS).
However, June and July broke this trend with year-on-year increases in production which, in turn, led to farmgate prices softening.
“The latest estimates for UK production show volumes have once again dipped below year earlier levels,” said Stuart Ashworth, Director of Economics Services at QMS.
Despite this slight tightening in supplies, UK prices have continued to drift downwards through August and into September...

Hard-won protections for both humans and livestock are under threat – and worth fighting for
Hunting, scientific experimentation, entertainment, the keeping of pets, farming, fishing, habitat destruction: there is no one story about the way that humans use animals – and cause them to suffer. So far, the UN reported this week, our collective efforts to protect wildlife globally have not succeeded. All 20 of the Aichi biodiversity targets agreed in Japan a decade ago...
