A lot of second-cut silage has been saved across farms over the last few weeks, as the mixture of warm and, at times, wet weather has allowed for grass growth rates to excel in many places.

Considering the wet spring farmers had to deal with and the drought in May and June, farmers, in many parts of the country, will be tempted to take a third cut of silage, if the opportunity presents itself.

The best thing a farmer can do to see if they require a third-cut of silage is to do up a fodder budget to see what feed supplies are sitting in the yard.

Only then will farmers know if they require extra feed for the winter period. Farmers that take a gamble could be...

UKAF_LOGO_Master-024700_160x220.jpg
UK Agricultural Finance (UKAF) has continued lending throughout the Covid-19 crisis and recently completed a £3m loan to help a poultry farmer develop and invest in their business.

The £3m loan was provided to borrowers who run a highly professional and substantial business. This was a complex loan to assess, as there were numerous different assets related to the core poultry business, with the acreage and security split across multiple plots. The separate plant being funded should result in the removal of all of their commercial heating needs, while also enabling rainwater harvesting to...

Recent findings from trials carried out by the Processors and Growers Research Organisation (PGRO) has shown that cultural techniques could help to manage seed fly damage. Charlotte Cunningham reports. Bean seed fly (delia platura) is a pest with a wide host range that includes peas and beans, the larvae feeding on imbibing seeds and small seedlings as they emerge. However, initial findings from trial work by PGRO suggests that the period between cultivation and drilling may be more important when managing the damage – rather than the drill type or whether rolling had been undertaken – with maximum damage recorded on the plots that were drilled on the same day as...

Forecasted August rainfall could provide an opportunity for oilseed rape establishment, according to the latest advice from Limagrain. Charlotte Cunningham reports. One of the key drivers in the decision to drill OSR for rapid and consistent emergence in order to avoid adult CSFB grazing is adequate moisture in the seedbed. With the recent and forecasted unsettled weather into early Aug, bringing rainfall to many parts of the country, soils are wetter than they have been for a few seasons, providing the much needed opportunity for OSR establishment. “Lack of moisture in the seedbed has been a dominant factor affecting establishment in the past two seasons, as...

Dairy producers will at last be able to get out and about to meet colleagues, see new kit and hear from expert speakers, with the welcome news that the Dairy Show will go ahead on 7 October.

Following the Government’s recent announcement that business events can recommence from October, the Royal Bath & West Society has contacted exhibitors to explain how it plans to meet health and safety guidance.

“Sadly, cattle classes will not be going ahead as we couldn’t manage social distancing in the judging ring and cattle lines,” says head of shows Alan Lyons. “But this has made available more internal space which will be filled with trade stands and open walkways.”...

Written by Rachel Martin

A new report has defined and detailed for the first time the value of the ‘natural economy’ to Scotland’s overall economic output, finding it represents more than a fifth of the nation’s economy.

The ‘natural economy’ is defined as comprising six sub-sectors that either directly use, rely or contribute to conserving natural resources, namely:

  • Tourism;
  • Food and drink;
  • Fishing and aquaculture;
  • Agriculture;
  • Energy (including renewables), and
  • forestry, logging and manufacture of wood.

Commissioned by SRUC and undertaken by BiGGAR Economics, a leading independent economic consultancy, the report argues that the natural economy is an...
