THE Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) is challenging West Lindsey District Council’s decision to remove its charitable rate relief.

The LAS, which operates from Lincolnshire Showground, is a non-profit making charitable organisation, set up in 1869 with the aim of educating people across the county about food, farming and a sustainable environment.

Because of the work it does for the Lincolnshire community in terms of education on food and farming with schools, colleges and charitable organisations, the LAS has had an 80% charitable rate relief for decades, but this has now been called into question by the council – which has taken the matter to court.

The LAS is fighting the action saying that without the rate relief, some of...

Tulip has confirmed that its Bodmin manufacturing site will remain open, although a further 49 jobs are to go at the factory.

In October, Tulip began a consultation on closing its ‘unsustainable’ Bodmin site, which it said would put 270 jobs at risk.

“While it remains a well-invested site with industry-leading capabilities, it is unsustainable to maintain operations under the existing business model,” Tulip said, stressing that closure was not a foregone conclusion and that it was seeking to galvanise employees, customers and suppliers to ‘agree a viable plan for the...

Martin Mortimer obituary

Written by Hugh Mortimer

My father, Martin Mortimer, who has died after a short illness aged 71, was an agricultural ecologist with expertise in weed management. His research focused on the mechanisms that maintain genetic diversity in perennial grass pastures, the evolution of herbicide resistance in cereal weeds and successful methods for the establishment of direct-seeded rice in Asia. He was determined to enhance sustainable livelihoods in agriculture together with alleviating poverty.

Born in Maidstone, Kent, Martin was the son of Dorothy (nee Coveney) and Jack Mortimer. The couple had waited until Jack returned from his wartime service in North...

Democrats are reaching farmers with an exciting message: green agriculture | Art Cullen

Every leading Democratic candidate supports a form of conservation that can reduce greenhouse gases and create jobs in rural America

Something you might have missed amid all the horserace and app-failure coverage of the Iowa caucuses: a deep discussion took place over the past year about the climate crisis and agriculture that could change the way our food system operates.

Every leading Democratic campaign now endorses an aggressive approach to conservation that could dramatically reduce greenhouse gases, improve water quality and enhance rural prosperity.
