Been pricing up bale spike for hestons/quads/4x3. Allbut and strimech seem somewhere near but dont look to be getting much for your money! So the old man going to have a go at making one. 4 tines and bushes £160, JCB brackets £120 and he's got £100 worth of box but still playing round with designs. Anybody got good pictures of spikes he can use as a guide?

Do the brackets need to be cocked forward slightly like on most buckets and grabs etc? Cant see the advantage of being able to crowd further down with a bale spike?

Wants to be able to pick up 2hestons, 3 3x4's or 4quads ideally!

Have made quite a few of the one in my profile picture <--
Been made to fit front loaders and telehandlers, have never angled the brackets though
3 tines across the bottom, grapple on the top with one ram on the back of it
picks up 2 or 3 hestons, 4 quads, up to 6 rounds on end (carefully)
can make one for you if needed, pm me if you want to know more

I've since made them a bit taller , I never thought the old girl would lift 4 .
4 spikes I'd possibly space the bottom of the brackets out a little to improve the crowd when low down !

One thing I don't do is put the tines in the bottom box section.

Like Woodcraft I put them about a foot up so that the tines go into the centre of the bale and the bit below stops the bales tipping forward , when the back frame is vertical.

My spike is about 8 foot tall and I only load trailer 4 quads high ( 12.5/80/15.3 tyres):banghead:

Shed is only 15 foot so take first 4 in and put in place, then take 2 off the top (of the 4)and place in front of the other 2.I can then place 2 heaps of 4 on top of these ,so that the stack is 6 high.Trailer is cleared in 6 visits.

I'm amazed there aren't some rules or testing required if you make these things yourself. After-all it is lifting equipment and things could go badly wrong.

Is it only me who is pee'd of with regulations,as if im going to do and or make something that could hurt or damage something

It is the world we live in now that is slowly but surely making it hard & expensive to run any small business. To many people make a living enforcing, inspecting for & making up ever more ridiculous regulations & rules which we are expected to live by.

Don't get me wrong, some are needed & I believe in doing things safely but common sense would now appear to be extinct in some sectors.
