I gather on the grapevine that some commercial shoots round here don`t have many beaters at all so far this season after being asked to go on the books.

Seem to be a load of middle aged women beating for our local shoot, suppose all the young lads are home wrapped in cotton wool.

Pay has been reduced to cover the cost of paying HMRC so we have been told and is now below what we got 15 years ago. While I never expected to make a profit from beating, I draw the line at me subsidising the shoot. It now doesn't cover the cost of diesel to get there, round the shoot and back, so we are sadly not bothering any more.

When I last went beating we all had to sign a sheet once you had received you're pay. It must have been a really famous shoot as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Alex ferguson were regularly part of the beating team according to the sheet.

I was told this was for tax reasons. Have things changed

I'm wondering where to put all the pheasants I do get, where the dogs aren't going to get at them  It's a small local farm shoot, so it's not costing much in fuel, and my first go at doing this sort of thing. My dog knows what she's doing, so she won't be an embarrassment, even if I prove to be, standing there sniffling that I've to put this bird out of its misery. :ROFLMAO:

I'm not sure if there's any other women on these particular shoots, but I could be the youngest (mid twenties) if there aren't any children/teens there.

I'm told beating was a particular favourite of the perpetually unemployed, topping up their benefits. Whether there's been a crack down this year, I have no idea. I was talking to a fellow picker up - it's about £30, on the bigger shoots and a brace or two, or it was last year, and he would be losing £5 of that to tax.
