Long forgotten Livestock Marts

I remember it well, also remember all the old boys getting peed up in The Bull on market day!
Yes, my Taid was one of them, but only once in a while whilst I was a sprog. They all drove home too, unthinkable today. It was the Bee they went to, remember sat quiet as officially no kids at the bar, whilst a bunch of 70 something year old farmers tried to figure out what the fock you did with a pool table, hilarious isn't the word.

Can you remember Stokesley @TripleSix bought by Northallerton I believe during F & M and never re opened when the marts all restarted. It's quite a somber thought really lots of things in all walks of life are growing out of all proportion in sure things could be better if there were still lots of smaller marts and private slaughter houses same as the high street been killed off by massive shopping centres and Internet shopping. Progress I suppose:scratchhead:

Anyone got pics of the 2 marts in lampeter? I can barely remember the new one open :(
Did anyone put any pics of Lampeter up, we used to sell calves in the old mart on a Tuesday, would be 300 calves there in the spring, don't think the new mart helped at all really and di not last long especially when King Thomas took our money down with them(n):(

No pictures of the old Aberystwyth mart, Talybont ( @GTB ) ,Ystrad near Felinfach.
@rc mx110 perhaps we should go and take some of Tregaron whilst it is still there:whistle:

On one of many trips north up the M6 we stayed near Penrith at a small place called Troutbeck, behind the B&B there was one of those old round auction huts, still had the wooden cattle pens around it , the steel pens had been removed, very interesting looked as though they just walked away.
We went to the new Penrith mart the next day apparently Troutbeck shut when the new Penrith mart opened.

Troutbeck was part of the old Penrith Farmers & Kidds auction co . agricultural Hall .Castlegate ,Penrith along with Lazonby ,Appleby, Kirkby Stephen
It was a sheep auction mart.

And it still shows on Google maps at the junction A66/A5091 beside The Troutbeck INN .

And from memory that was a dangerous place to be after the sale had finished

Troutbeck Inn that's where we stayed, that little place must have been quite a hive of activity, am I right the railway was there to take stock off too?

Penrith to Keswick railway did run past at one time , but don't know if it was ever used for stock, I think most if not all markets were at one time near to or joined the railway .
Troutbeck was always mainly a sheep market with large numbers for seasonal sales.
I'm surprised to see it still there , it must belong to someone ,so how its escaped development / change is strange. Id be interested in its story since olden days, I ll have a look on the Cumberland website for planning if I can find it.

Talking of railway being used for livestock, in Welshpool the old pens for loading onto the railway are clearly visible by the side of the road at the old mart site,@Kevtherev are there any plans to preserve them? Who owns that piece of land now?

Yes I think Welshpool town council are going to keep them there I think.
Not sure who owns them now.
The shed next to them used to be where Reginald tildesley sold fordsons in the early days.
