Went to the Normead sale today for a couple of hours.
Top price I saw was the fancied Normead Twist Helena Ex-91 at 5000 gns

Lots of people there, mainly just locals looking I think. Very nice facilities, great shame its all going to waste.

Freddy Hiam's thrown in the towel, selling up and getting the fudge out of Pembrokeshire. 8 jobs lost and 700 cows for sale.
Doesn't take long for big companies to get going when the going gets tough.Remember Dalgety in the 90's ?

Don't know anything about this herd but doesn't look a busy ring side? Dealers busy.

As more to life said, very old herd with a lot of history. Son and daughters not interested I'm told. They were on a Cadburys contract, so a good price by today's standards, 27ppl. I only saw about 50 sell and apart from the top seller in the photo the dearest I saw was £2200, with others £1200 - £1400. A fresh vg88 Calver giving 44kg with its few days old calf went for £1380.
Some dry cows due in the next month didn't make £1000.
They sold some young stock today as A lots right after their mothers and I thought they were strong money compared to some of the cows.
The catalogue is probably still online as its a 2 day sale, look on Norton and brooksbank site

Horrible time to make these decisions. Hope when it's finished they push on in a new direction.

Possibly the foremost herd in the country in terms of a recognisable name that still remained,I was trying to think of a herd that goes in the same category and didn't come up with one that's still around that would be as well known in all areas. In my time, the pre-eminent names like Ullswater,Hunday,Grove, etc have all gone..

There are plenty of rumours flying around as to why they are dispersing but I am certainly not going to get dragged into discussing these on a public forum. I'm sure the family had their own personal/business decisions as to the timing of this sale, let's just say that for those fortunate to be buying there yesterday and today they will be getting quality cattle backed by over seventy years of breeding for what appears to be in some cases a snippet.

watched a lot of it on web cam while refurbishing farm office

looked like some very nice cows , a lot of milk about them

Does anyone know what is happening to the second half of this sale?
When I sold my Holsteins back in 2008 a lorry load of heifers went up to Fishers, I watched a lot of their daughters sold in the first sale and was wandering if any of my originals may be in the second sale, older cows by now.

If you are on about Fishers at Longtown, a geezer was telling me that he is still milking about 400 so I don't know if they are going out or not.

I'm pretty sure the sales have been cancelled. Heard they have a new milk contract, but that maybe is just rumours.
