Solar PV linked to GSHP.

I am hopefully putting up a new unit which will be well suited to putting 25 - 50Kw of PV on the roof. Our equipment runs 365 days year with the greatest demands on hot days, but we would draw an average of between 15Kw (night) to 35Kw (summers day) so we would be in a good position to use a lot of our own production. I would also like to put in a GSHP to heat 2 houses and the units with the Solar on (1400 sq m each) but only as a background heat in the cooler months. We may also be able to put in a small wind turbine but I am told that these just do not pay any more.

Will it still stack up?

Any suggestions on companies you may have used that have been good on advice and delivery?

Thanks.

We've got an 80Kw GSHP heating 4 properties and partially serviced by a 30Kw PV system. It's not clear yet how much of a contribution the PV is making to the energy demands of the GSHP but it's obviously doing something! In our case although we don't have the heat pumps running much at the moment the distribution pumps serving the properties are running all the time to provide hot water so at the very least they're running for free. Our PV also serves the grain store fans and 3 phase demands on the farm so the GSHP demand is difficult to fully quantify.

We are hoping in the longer term that the heat pumps will be able to talk to the inverters (the pumps can already do this bit, inverters can't) to assess what is being produced, potentially turning on early or over heating the storage tanks when "free" electricity is available off the roof.

What you will find is that you generate 50Kw on sunny, cooler days (often late May from our experience) but when you get through to air temperatures in the mid to high 20's the efficiency will drop off somewhat. Therefore you won't necessarily have a spare 15Kw to run the GSHP with at the peak of summer or during the winter/late autumn/early spring and it'll spend a lot of time running off imported power. GSHP stack up at the moment without solar though so any contribution from the PV is an added bonus.

If you talk about PV with your GSHP installer keep an eye on the projected returns for the GSHP. They are quite adept at assuming a generous contribution from the PV to help improve the ROI, even if the capacity is already destined for elsewhere as in your case.

It'll cost nothing to get several analysis quotations compiled by a few companies and cross reference the findings and results.

You may need to deal with a hard sell along the way so only schedule 30 minutes to an hour to hear the final pitch, not the site visit. Get them to assess your needs and have your questions ready on the final pitch.

Always request work references.

Until you have the calculated findings you will never know.

We have an 80kW GSHP heating a hotel in St Andrews, we cover all technologies, PV, Thermal, Heat pumps and biomass. We cover both domestic and commercial installations. If we can be of any help just send me a message.
