Best battery fencer with a big kick!

I run my electric fences off Rutland 1.7joule fencers. OK until today and the goat kids work out to go under between pulses and 1 slips down the steep riverbank needing a heroic rescue from 2 of us as his face was inches from the water.

Is there a stronger one which will run off battery power and with quick pulses? Can't get mains to the next (riverbank for 1000m) field so I'm thinking it would be wise to upgrade so I'm not worrying all day. I put 3 strands so it is quite a stretch to power I suppose.

The mole valley 3.5j one is very good. it runs off battery or mains. i bought one of these when I brought my sheep down to Somerset and it keeps them in well both ewes and lambs. @Henarar will happily touch the mains fence but doesn't like touching this one.

Thanks, just looked at the MVF, looks good and not too expensive. "for maximum efficiency minimum of two earth stakes are recommended" Why do I need 2 earths or is that for really long distances?

When we were kids we always thought one type of fencer gave more of a buzz than a whack if you get what I mean. Could be more effective on goats but I couldn't tell which type of fencer it was.

With the esb i opened it up and turned 1 of the variable resistors to speed it up
Whereas it was doing say 1 pulse every 2 seconds on low and a pulse every 1 second on high
It now does 2pulses a second on high and 1 on low

Get a solar panel and charge controller off ebay and have it connected to your fence battery. This won't repair rubbish fencing but does ensure your electric fence is as good as it can be at all times.
I bought a 20W panel recently and I am impressed so far. Might not be up to the job in the depths of winter but at the moment my battery is constantly fully charged.

Thanks for the advice, I have the MV 3500 one now in the field with a huge earth stake banged right in and the whole fence is alive a live oh, happy days! I've ditched the little earth stakes for all the fencers and got proper ones. What a difference.

The earth is the most important part of the electric fence and the most overlooked. If the power cant get back to the energizer you don't have a circuit so don't have a shock and is the achilles of many an electric fence system.
Try and get the earth stakes in moist ground and if using multiple stakes put them 2m apart and link them together. The bigger the surface area the better. Good to see the fence is better with a proper earth stake!

I had a chat with a Gallagher rep who was in the local Wynnstay store. He said to get the fence up and running then short it out by leaning a metal post against it a various points and go back to test the earth with the tester to make sure it is not live.

Another vote for the MVF3500. A very good unit for the price. I've got on on 8 x 50m poultry nets and still getting a good whack. I imagine it would go miles on a single strand.
