Anemia

I'm taking ferrous fumerate for low haemoglobin and iron, no problems yet...:cautious: hardest bit is taking all my bloomin' tablets at the correct phase of the day (most of mine have to be taken on an empty stomach) when some of them can't be taken at the same time as each other. On antibiotics now as well due to an infected thumb

Please do not ignore it @farmer pickles - anemia can be a killer. Go back to the GP and tell him as there are a number of ways to help build you up. Somewhere in the back of my brain is an inkling that you should also take VitC as this can help with the absorption of the iron. Not that I trust my brain much any more, it tends to pop up irrelevant facts!
Did he also do thyroid tests or liver function tests?

You are correct about the iron/vit c link. Have a glass of orange juice with your weetabix and broccoli. (y)

My poo has gone green/black! Relieved to read this is quite normal on iron tablets.

The thumb is not as pink as it was, the flucoxicillin seems to be working, but got a lovely collection of pus now and still very swollen and tender so might have to go back to the quack and get some more antibiotics as well as getting it lanced - I'm afraid I have to be pretty careful nowadays so won't just be sticking a needle in it as I am likely to make the infection worse. Really difficult doing anything without being able to grip using my thumb :grumpy:

I am on ferrous tablets yet again. I have been on them on and off for last three years due to constant tiredness. When they test my levels always 6 or 7 and should be over 20. Tablets usually get it up to about 33. They help a bit but not a great deal. Doctors just don't understand why levels keep dropping as a red meat eater etc. Think my body just doesn't absorb it very well.

Dunk your thumb in iodine and a needle and just jab it
That's what I would have done in the past, however I am on immunosuppresants and under strict Dr's orders to take any infections very seriously and not try to deal with them myself. Had a nasty case of cellulitis a couple of years ago and nearly lost my finger tip. I have very thick skin and also didn't fancy trying to get a needle in. Seen by nurse today she jabbed and drained it and then cut all the surface skin away which I could not have done as I would have had to do it left-handed. Sterile washout, inadine, thumb stall and back tomorrow to see if I need another course of penicillin. So AI glove on for mixing up my calf milk and bottle feeding! I did actually spill iodine all over my hand dipping a calf navel a couple of days ago! I love inadine dressings, they seem to numb the pain too.

Does your low iron play havoc with your nails too? Mine have gone very brittle with vertical ridges. I have never had long nails or used nail polish but they are really upsetting me at present as the brittleness is a real pain, if I try and grip anything eg pick up a feed sack or manhandle a newborn calf to move it or lift it to its feet they are very painful.

No it doesn't - just feel like I am dragging myself around all the time.
