Ranging poles

The only person who ever queried my having four poles was Alex Irvine when I was ploughing next to him at the Nationals. I thought it was just a Scottish thing. When I take to the tractor seat I am actually looking at only two poles, one at about 2/3 to 3/4 distance and the other 15-20 metres out on the far headland. I only use poles on the peg marks to set up the other two.

So the SOP are not going to hold any ploughing matches until 2033 ?

no, the ranging poles they were selling off were the huge collection they had for all the international visiting teams. the sop are not hosting the world's again for a long time as the provisional sites are announced until 2033 and it's not here until after then. (in fact it could be even longer than that) it's a long while to store a lot of kit you have no idea when they will need again.

the sop won't need that many poles for the British Nationals,

Guys, stop pissing about with your poles! I did this with one pole and crashed through it at 4 mph! About turn and go for a cuppa. If you can't drive then no amount of poles will help.

And with that sort of curve on it you might have scored more points by doing the job correctly ?
10-12 points only from me I'm afraid

As in all things - failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Whilst an excellent attempt for a newcomer, very few matches are won in this area with openings such as this. Not wishing to dishearten but 10 - 12 is about right.
Don't loose sight of the fact that dropping points early on leaves a dearth that is impossible to make up later.

View attachment 404668 If you take a look at the link posted the other day re what judges are looking for, that would be down to about 8! Thats out of 20 mind.

This one, done with two poles may score a bit higher.
Still a long way from straight and the two outermost furrows are irregular , unbalanced and it looks like touched with a tailpiece as well.
Sorry but no pictures of openings but this finish is what straight is all about

Quite, however, I merely stated that it was better, not perfect. In sop rules it states that there is no requirement for the ripplings to be the same size, or to match. The Danish info also mentions this, and light use of a fin is also accepted.
The outer two furrows are irregular, but a closer look will show the the light points coincide, that is down to deep tramlines, and the ploughman can only plough whats there!

I just fitted a depth wheel 3" above concrete on an extended rear frog bolt. Will put a cheap bamboo cane at the far end and a pole beyond. Going to drive as fast as I can without stopping! A left hand disc on the second run is wise, then have a cuppa.

Don't get personal Howard and Pennine! My first run across will now be at a controlled depth, no stopping, really fast to throw that slice away, crash through the far sacrificial bamboo pole victorious! Turn and check, it is not that important, try again.

Sounds like a really worthwhile exercise. You should write a kiddies cartoon strip.

Who knows - Hans Christian Andersen eat your heart out, although some of the things rick posts on here are veritable horror stories.
The possibilities are endless, humourist, satirist, comic author, political commentator.
Seems like the only thing missing from the repertoire appears to be 'ploughman':D

OK Luddites, I just fitted a camera on my RH kingpin and with a bicycle headlamp at the far end going for a top gear first run to throw that slice away! No fancy shares nor double jointed extensions, speed kills.

I made my poles from 25mm thin walled tube with a sharpened 10mm point welded on the side, the advantage of this is if your pole is only a little out you can twist the pole round to get it in line, I painted them white with some red stripes, cost me about 20 quid for 3 2m poles.
