Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Just when we were buying calves off dealers we ended up with a portion of rubbish.
If your buying your own you will be able to use your own judgement and avoid the duffers.
We rear conti x now only because i have a good sorce of calves from one farm.
Guth obviously doesn't buy bad doers or rubbish, which is a miracle buying out of market, as you can't be sure on the pneumonia/bvd/johnes history, especially if you haven't reared them yourself.

What's a realistic average deadweight for a friesan bullock? 370kg?

Couple of years ago when we were buying a lot more stores in, the holstein/friesian bullocks would generally be 320-340kg DW. Very rarely much heavier than that. One thing I've found since breeding our own is that it's much quicker/easier to take a homebred animal to 420kg DW than anything that gets bought in (decent average stores bought at an affordable price that is, we could never justify paying big money for the toppers).

Strangely enough, I was selling store cattle today and they would be £50 a head down on a fortnight ago but the real fancy stuff would be £100 a head down. Big rangy bullocks were the only thing holding their value, made the fancy stuff look very cheap in comparison.

Touch wood I haven't lost a Fri steer yet, you never lose the cheap animals, sods law means it's always the more expensive Sim/ Lim etc that decide to keel over for me!

Ref the price of stores, hellish trade for them at sedge last Sat ( even with over 900 strong stores entered on the day ) in the stirks anything that was suckler bred and farmed well was making crazy money with some 12 month old BB Steers making £1080/1050 etc, I think if you have suckled calves to sell in the next few weeks and they are decent sorts you will have nothing to worry about, if your selling poor grade/ reared stuff the yep it wont be that good of trade but that is because of the time of year.
