I have owned a small croft for 8 years but don't live in the croft house however I work the croft land and sheds etc!! I am currently renovating the house which is unoccupied with the hope to let it out!!! Are there any legalities I need to look out for in doing this???!!

Crofting law is unique to crofting and I am about 30 years out of date, but so far as I am aware the "improvements" (house, buildings, fences, etc) belong to the crofter and provided he stays within crofting law he can do what he likes with them. The bare land usually belongs to the landlord. So, unless things have changed, the croft house belongs to the crofter and he can let it out.

There are solicitors in the Highlands who are specialists in crofting law and I'd suggest an initial inquiry over the telephone might be free. The Crofters' Commission also used to be good with advice, but I haven't dealt with them for years. But do be careful, some tenants can be notoriously difficult to get rid of!
