Thames valley all sorts. Heavy clay, to sandy gravel, to chalky loam. Majority on the workable side.

How do the 5" ones go in wetter soils, and how do you gauge depth?

We are predominantly using the 2.5", better in damper conditions as less soil movement, depth control is good.

I have been looking at changing a Vad for St 8 meter, I'm a bit worried I would be short of Hp. (340 Hp JD) I think it would be OK for early autumn but not sure about late season and Spring drilling?

I was putting beans in 4-5 inches deep with two inch single openers 1st December with a ST6 on a magnum 310. I believe the ST8 has only has one more tine on two rows instead of the ST6 three rows. 340hp should have no problem. Spring barley was no problem too.

I bought a new set of Accord ones as the ones on the drill were either getting worn through or perished. They fitted perfectly.

Do these 2.5" openers work well for all sorts of situations i.e.; beans/cereals & osr? Or would I be better with a 1" & 5" set? Wandering with rape whether seed would be too deep or can you take pipes off & dribble seed on top leaving the leg to go deep? Cheers dh

Metcalfe tines for rape. 2.5 inch Dutch for winter beans. And for spring barley. 5 inch for winter cereals

Blimey that's a lot of choice! Why metcalf for rape & not say the 1" or 2.5" Dutch ? I guess you have to unbolt everything to change to the metcalf ones ? Cheers dh
