Do chemical toilets freeze?

Current farm toilet freezes up in these frosts and I need something that's more reliable when contractors and tenants are around. Just exploring my options.

Long term I need to either build a new toilet, or work out a way of running one of those powered coils around the supply pipe.

Auntie has an outside toilet and uses one of these to keep frost off. You have to remember to light it of course so electric on a thermostat would be better.

To protect the water supply if that is where the problem is I would recommend plenty of insulation first with a soil warming cable inside if you get severe frost problems.

Perfect!!! That would do perfectly!! I knew I'd come across a product before (mentioned on here in fact i think!) to do this. All I could find was "Frost free cable" in Screwfix at £60 for 10m....and they're all out of stock! Just ordered up 12m off ebay for £28 delivered to my door!

Thank you!!

12m is 150W I think, so if you are happy leaving a 150W element on permanently then no you don't need a thermostat.
Personally I would use a thermostat or you are going to waste electric and flush with warm water.

When you put the cable to the pipe you don't need to wind it around the pipe. Just cable tie it to it or simply tuck it inside the insulation foam (assuming you have fitted some).
Winding it around the pipe just means it won't go as far.

Perfect, thank you. I wasn't sure if cable tying it on a single side would cause half the pipe to stay unfrozen. Thanks for your advice!

I would doubt a portaloo would freeze easily, the additive is basically formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde which is similar.

The flush pump sucks out of the waste tank. (Which is one of those things you wish you never knew!)
