sandblasting media

Hi quick question what media do people find the best for sandblasting tractor rims and panels and what grade for each applicatation thanks

I use expendable grit, I use fine grit for the likes of wheel rims if they aren't to heavily corroded. I've only tried blasting a set of panels once using fine stuff and it left it too coarse to get a decent shine from the paint. Took a hell of a sanding down and still wasn't great so I'd avoid it personally.

Blasting we use a crushed glass as it is easy to get hold of, but are thinking of walnut shells etc as it isnt as course.
In our cabinet blaster we use aluminun oxide it lasts longer an isnt to harsh on the panels either but exspensive

If you wanted to blast a 12 ton trailer . It's not too bad .just to smarten it up how much media would you use roughly , And where best place for getting a suit ,helmet and filter as bought a clemco pot at a farm sale ,and does it need testing like compressors

Web for suit etc there are firms on there an ring them up
Its hard to say with the media at a rough guess 5-10 bags they waste alot of media stoping an starting best to keep her going do it somewhere clean then media can be seived an reused

If its paint and light rust a medium grit will do
But heavy scab rust a course then a fine unles the area can be sanded afterwards then the fine process shouldnt be need

The media goes in stages of grade as there is that many grades for jobs

But a medium should be a good start

can you paint straight onto the medium grit after and get a decent finish

As far as I'm aware, pot, hoses etc don't need testing in the same way as compressors.

I bought my suit, helmet, and pot all direct from Clemco last year. Very helpful and good to deal with. Hodge Clemco recently bought out a company which produces the media too, and so they stock every possible grade and type of grit you can imagine. They can do the whole lot pretty competitively.

The chap to speak to on gear is Martin Johnson on 07710 562732.

@David the spud man - If you ask for Sophie in the Hodge Clemco office on 0114 254 8100 they will be happy to discuss grit and abrasives for whatever job you need.
