Just scanned our home ones today and did 192%. Up on last year (175%). Mules to the texel. They weren't in great nick pre tupping but have done great considering.
Where they raddled @beltextexel ?Disappointing scan here. 624 ewes scanned 160% (180% last year). 23 gelds.
437 hoggs only did 86%. (119% last year). 104 geld.
All Beltex x or texel x. Ewes are in good order and hoggs are growing away very well so disappointed in the results. Some ewes were running a bit tight at tupping which maybe explains the low %. What's the general consensus about scanning % around the country this year?
Our scanner said the same, most people down. Lots more singles and very few triplets.
I've had the opposite here, less singles (although still a few too many for my liking) and a few more trips, not enough to worry about though.
I seem to have the opposite success to most though...good years when others are bad and vise versa, they say a lambing alternates good followed by bad, hopefully not as I had a good one last year!
best ive had i have a third less singles and also less trips which is strange with more twins obv my uncles theory of more twins more trips is rubbish.!! I have done nothing different this year apart from weaning 2 weeks earlier in the back end
we have scanned and not had a good year, only 5 empties out of 150 but 90 singles. I have only come back onto farm last couple of years and prior to this replacements were picked on basis of what was left at end of year. So I know genetic quality is not great in flock. our ewes are all Lleyn or lleyn x dorset. I think the ewes were in too good condition 3.5/4 is some cases. but question is which has a bigger impact on numbers... ewe condition or genetics?
average age of 10 weeks would usually be around 12/14weeks. Tryed earlier and noticed no major upsets with the lambs. So will be weaning them all early this summer again. What age did you wean at mate?
I wouldn't be too worried if they were CS 3.5-4, certainly better there than CS 2 at mating. Much over 4 and they'll be pulling numbers down maybe, but 3.5 for a lowland ewe is spot on in my book.
I would be looking for another reason for low prolificacy. Presumably the same/similar genetics were scanned last year. Are they always around that prolificacy, or is something different this year?
Depends on if you are restricted in how long you want to be committed to looking them. Ours get two cycles and that's it, makes lambing from April first to mid may and that's long enough for us.All you chaps complaining about empty ewe's, why do you take the tups out, surely a late lamb is better than no lamb.
One lot of mine, the rams are still in and they had a higher barren rate than the sheep that were just given two cycles. All you chaps complaining about empty ewe's, why do you take the tups out, surely a late lamb is better than no lamb.
But surely those ewes won't be empty, they'll just be late. One lot of mine, the rams are still in and they had a higher barren rate than the sheep that were just given two cycles.
Scanner should be able to tell the difference between late and emptyBut surely those ewes won't be empty, they'll just be late.
Be interesting to see if cs is relatedDisaster here this year .
Could be worse ever .
Empties at about 10% usually 2-3% and overall 30% less than I normally expect . Vets says dry Autumn with some theory about toxins in dry grass limiting production? My diary does remind me that BCS was an issue in summer , a lot of 300 sent away to fresh keep, scanned the worse . We are still well below the normal rainfall curve by 250mm . Next summer could be interesting.
I recorded ewe weights and BCS pre tupping and it will be interesting to see correlation when I get scan results into the
Border.
But some comfort in that I don't think I will be alone in this extreme SE corner .
A bit depressing really along with everything else .
I agree with you really but our tups came out the day we scanned, we'll probably re-scan our barrens in a couple weeks as we scanned a week earlier this year than lastAll you chaps complaining about empty ewe's, why do you take the tups out, surely a late lamb is better than no lamb.
