Disappointing scan here. 624 ewes scanned 160% (180% last year). 23 gelds.
437 hoggs only did 86%. (119% last year). 104 geld.
All Beltex x or texel x. Ewes are in good order and hoggs are growing away very well so disappointed in the results. Some ewes were running a bit tight at tupping which maybe explains the low %. What's the general consensus about scanning % around the country this year?
Where they raddled @beltextexel ?

Our scanner said the same, most people down. Lots more singles and very few triplets.

I've had the opposite here, less singles (although still a few too many for my liking) and a few more trips, not enough to worry about though.
I seem to have the opposite success to most though...good years when others are bad and vise versa, they say a lambing alternates good followed by bad, hopefully not as I had a good one last year!

No not raddled, just turned tups out and left them to it. All sheep are enzo and toxo vaccinated and there were no signs of any abortion. The geld ewes were generally all from one group that was turned out with 3 tups suggesting that one tup was not doing his job. Doesn't explain the low % though. Too many singles. A previous group of hoggs we scanned which were 3/4 bred Beltex or purer scanned at 136% with only 5 geld out of 121 so I was expecting these more commercial hoggs to do similar.

we have scanned and not had a good year, only 5 empties out of 150 but 90 singles. I have only come back onto farm last couple of years and prior to this replacements were picked on basis of what was left at end of year. So I know genetic quality is not great in flock. our ewes are all Lleyn or lleyn x dorset. I think the ewes were in too good condition 3.5/4 is some cases. but question is which has a bigger impact on numbers... ewe condition or genetics?

I wouldn't be too worried if they were CS 3.5-4, certainly better there than CS 2 at mating. Much over 4 and they'll be pulling numbers down maybe, but 3.5 for a lowland ewe is spot on in my book.
I would be looking for another reason for low prolificacy. Presumably the same/similar genetics were scanned last year. Are they always around that prolificacy, or is something different this year?

I've just got my first 100 lambs on the ground and it feels like it's taken 100 ewes to get them!! Fortunately i haven't lost many and it's nice to have some strong lambs to look at especially when trying to hit the spring lamb trade but i'd be kidding myself if i didn't want a few more lambs. Fortuantely i didn't scan them cos it would have ruined my Christmas but the first 70 ewes that have lambed would have scanned out at 150% and that's obviously not taking into account the geld ones that i'll find out about at the end.

yeah our scanning has been around this for last 2/3 years. We have bought in a lot of new ewe lambs and new tups to see if this can make a difference. They are scanned in 2 weeks, just wanting to see if I should start culling out for singles then if that's all their rearing. Started EID this year as well, so hopefully that should reveal more about them as well.

Disaster here this year .
Could be worse ever .
Empties at about 10% usually 2-3% and overall 30% less than I normally expect . Vets says dry Autumn with some theory about toxins in dry grass limiting production? My diary does remind me that BCS was an issue in summer , a lot of 300 sent away to fresh keep, scanned the worse . We are still well below the normal rainfall curve by 250mm . Next summer could be interesting.

I recorded ewe weights and BCS pre tupping and it will be interesting to see correlation when I get scan results into the
Border.

But some comfort in that I don't think I will be alone in this extreme SE corner .

A bit depressing really along with everything else .
