Even the suggestion that there is no market for a Defender is utterly insane

It would be like suggesting the mini, vw bettle, Porsche 911 etc were not worth updating and selling because the old version was somewhat out of date vs modern competition - all of these icons are massive updated success stories and fundamental to their respective manufacturers image and wider range success

These cars including the defender are part of a very exclusive club - motoring icons. If a manufacturer owns a iconic model they WILL capitalise on that both directly and as a halo effect to their range

There is a market for a defender replacement, it will sell like hot cakes and for silly money

Posters on this forum just seem rather bitter as they are not that market any longer mostly, why would Landrover cheapen it's now exclusive and rather well selling brand trying by to compete with cheap, basic Jap pick-ups ?

If you think the mini is an update of the original, you haven't been near either, only the spelling of the name is the same, (they are not even small) its just marketing hype... but seems to work on some.

That's true. New Mini is about the same size as the old Maxi. I think I'm right in saying BMW owns the Riley and other marque names too

If course it's different - but it stil leverages the brand and history and has been massively successful as a result ......... just as the new defender will do

How stupid would it have been if they had simple decided the old mini was outdated and not bothered with a replacement !

At least the forthcoming new Mercedes will be a proper utility vehicle, albeit an expensive one. By the looks of it the new Defender will not be, so using the name purely as a marketing tool looks disingenuous to say the least. I agree that it will sell in limited numbers.
Seeing as it going down the same line as their luxury models, according to LR officials, it will almost certainly be built in limited volumes unless they expect the demand for Range Rover variants to decline and for this to take up the slack.

I suspect though that they will soon revamp the three top models [RR LWB, RR and RRS] to continue to make upgrading desirable and keep the things fresh. The new faux-Defender luxury toy will therefore be more based on the new Disco5 or the first refreshed update of that model. Off that production line they will probably be looking at vehicles retailing at £45k + taxes or more by 2018

Thinking of the overall market for expensive luxury vehicles of all brands, just who is going to buy them all? Every manufacturing company seems to be expanding rapidly into that sector of the market even while the spending power of the average consumer, and the proportion of high earners is declining. Before they know it, there will be major losers in this market niche as well as winners. Hopefully JLR will be winners, but already there are signs that the Jaguar part is not doing so well and is failing to make the impression that it aspires to. Luckily the Velar will take up any slack on the F-Pace line, but what about the other models and its dealers? They don't seem to be sharing in the success of LR/RR.

So to summarise there may or may not be a new defender, but what we all appear to agree on (for once) is that if one does put in an appearance it will be a yuppie truck not a mart run/diesel bowser/dead sheep shifter/gofer mobile:scratchhead:
Yup. More of the same from LR. All the boll*ks air con, leather seats, electric windows, carpet & etc. I still ask what's wrong with a basic and by that I mean like of old where even the heater was an option? I was in Southampton docks not that long ago and the LR's lined up only had a windscreen wiper on the drivers side.......

All old machinery and cars have shrunk with age. :ROFLMAO:

Haven't they just...
