Is this the data we could opt out of allowing them to use about 18 months ago?

Yes! I suggest that we all write to the Information Commissioner to get them to investigate.

But I think in all honesty RBI are doing no different to most other commercial businesses. We just don't realise what's going on. Eg. Tesco Clubcard - they know more about your shopping habits than you do and they use this information for commercial advantage.

Big difference IMO is that Tesco don't charge you to use a club card !

My beef with all this is I paid a LOT of money for Gatekeeper a long time before they were owned by RBI (Farmers weekly) and my buying decision would have been very different had I known this is what their software was REALLY for

I continue to pay a lot every year for support - multi site and multi business its a significant cost and opt out or not I don't feel like I want to trust them with my data anymore when they are clearly just selling it to the highest bidder and doing nothing with it that I can see is of any benefit to my business (the business that pays for it !)

Stinks IMO

Time for your new project Clive.... Farmer owned software company!

Most users only use/need a fraction of what gatekeeper is capable of. I'm sure a new (and much fresher looking) and web based software could be designed and payed for without too much difficulty.

I think this is what they are planning with Gatekeeper Express.

Lots of adverts in FW for it at moment, but when i filled in the forms on the website twice nobody replied to me!

I saw the initial testing for gk express 2 years ago and it's a lot better but it's still the same cost and same company.
A farmer owned software company could do this much cheaper!

Looking at greenlight as an alternative. Is the PF side of greenlight as good as Gatekeeper ? Currently got wireless data to and from Gatekeeper?
I can't see that there are any other options out there.

I have been using Greenlight for a few months now. It is very much still being developed. I am told PF is on its way but I do not know a time scale. There are quite regular updates. In the latest one there have been some very useful changes to the app allowing plans for fertiliser and chemical to be created off line. That has been very helpful for me. I have been pushing for PLANET and NVZ integration, I know its being worked on and I do wonder if they are waiting for the RB 209 update which is due.

It is very easy to learn and I do like the app, the one thing I do know for certain is that the App will be IOS only. There are no plans to develop an Android version.

Interesting read

I have just got into gatekeeper and based on the hardware integration it was a one horse race, 3 or 4 different brands of gps kit here and budget doesn't allow fitting every machine up third party so industry leading integration makes it a no brainer.

I understand people don't want their data sold but really who cares, so they tell chem suppliers what you bought last year and what your cropping plan is and what your margin is, it's not a secret, unless I'm missing something the worst that can happen is you get pestered by more salesmen, just tell them to do one.

The cost of what they sell immediately suggests there is something more to their business, with the basic program at £1200 an organisation with a dozen staff needs to sell better than one license a day to cover labour and the market isn't that big.

It's a lot more expensive than that ! With options and multi farms etc I must have spent several thousand on it over the years and annual support is best part of £1000

Software is cheap - Xero accounts costs just over £20/month, There are up and coming clouds farm record software companies that will be priced similarly and don't sell your data either

The data is VERY valuable and it's ours, I'm less concerned about the use of the data, than frankly the open theft of it by Farmplan

If I was being offered something back in return for the information like free software, benchmarking info or even cash then it would maybe feel a bit different about it but as it stands I'm being charged to be stolen from !

I do wonder if farmplan have realised they are now in a much more competitive market than they were. When I first started with farmplan 25 years ago I was like most other farmers wanting to move from paper accounts with next to no computer knowledge. Farmplan were really the only company that could talk computers with farmers. I bit the bullet and have used them since.

I never got on with their cropping software and used business manager for 20 years. These days software is simple to learn as everything is on the Web you don't need £600 a day training. And almost all farmers have a decent enough computer knowledge. So there is really no need for farmplans expensive and in my opinion out of date software. I am just finishing my 1st year with xero accounts it has been like changing from a cabless tractor to a fendt.

I think farmplan rbi have realised this and are trying to earn more off the knowledge they have gained from the customers rather than trying to replace the software they produce

I am just glad gate keeper was too expensive and didn't fit my needs.

I can't wait for some better cloud based software to come out. Gatekeeper is ridiculous and the fees they charge for it are criminal.
