I know it's a pretty unproductive grass, as far as agricultural production goes, but I really do like the smell of it, either in hay or when it's mown or when you walk on it. I got a bit more top dressing done this morning and walked through a patch when going back to the tractor.............. Aaahhhh, what a great smell. I reckon if I could bottle it I could give Chanel No5 a run for it's money.

Anybody else got any favourite farming fragrances :scratchhead:

Sweet vernal gives a lovely smell, but has a high coumarin content, which can cause problems with blood clotting, so dont munch on it as you wander or lean on a gate...

The smell of primroses is so fleeting, they only really smell for a few hours when in full sun, but the scent is so lovely I wish I could bottle it. When the May is in full bloom, it smells lovely in the air, but if you stick your nose in it, it smells of cat pee - how does it do that?

Just found this post - has anyone actually seen or known of sweet vernal grass in their DRY hay that caused harm to cows or horses?

I've read that the vernal grass becomes problem when it molds, but is not harmful(?) in dry hay. I should think silage would or could have sweet vernal grass issues is there is enough in it.

What about it - dry hay? Any known issues when a bale of hay has some of it in the bale and is fed out to cattle or horses?

IME, it's never present in big enough quantities to be a problem - makes it smell really good though.

Cows breath, puppies feet and balsam poplar are a few that I really like in addition to some already mentioned
