Drought

171mm for the year so far. If that trend continues, that's 513mm for the year.

Annual average is near 750mm. So either it's going to be the driest year on record or there is going to be a massive wet spell to come.

Would you have a record of how the last 3 months of 2016 compared to average? Drains were barely running all winter. If we get that periods rain evened up then it will be an ark we'll be needing;)

The annoying thing is the forecast says it's going to rain and you can just feel that it won't but your hopes are raised then disappointed.

It is also a bit hysterical to forecast wintry showers for this area over the next couple of days. There will be no sleet or snow. There won't be a huge windchill or much of a frost. The sun is higher in the sky and for longer at this time of year. Makes a big difference, but from the forecasts you would think we are about to plunged into a deep freeze. Won't happen.

Best just to take things a day at a time, and do something else to take your mind off things.

One thing I've learned is that any sort of soil disturbance has been extremely detrimental in terms of moisture loss this spring. I know it's obvious, but a spring like this concentrates the mind on forward planning to allow more zero till drilling next year.

No, I don't have that information. Given it rained almost every day last winter, I would suspect it would be high.

I will see if I can find anything on the net.

Met office figures for leuchars.

Jan-apr 2016 is 298.6mm

Jan-mar 2017 is 130.4mm

So my figure earlier is maybe a bit high. Was taken from fifeweather.co.UK. they are in a slightly wetter part of fife than leuchars.

Very nice. For those doubting how serious it is this is my current situation here on my modest acreage;
WB all poor to very poor, not enough tillers. Volume particularly poor, others better. Rain can't save this.
WW 20% still good, 60 very average 20% poor. Rain soon could save this.
Winter beans poor, better bits average, stressed a foot tall and trying to flower. God knows what the frost this week will do to the flowers?!
Spring barley, 30 % good, 40% average, 30% poor. TBH just glad that all of it will be a crop. Without rain soon, this will deteriorate rapidly as not got hold of N.
Sugar beet, 50% good, 50% not sure whether there will be a crop at all.
Linseed 50% poor 50% critical.
Like @bankrupt my modest forward sales are now looking like a much greater percentage of my production.

Not happy.

+1 :(
