Hi i am considering buying the above baler ,but know little about the model ,it looks in very good condition and has had new belts,i have looked for information on the baler through the internet, and have seen conflicting reports ,some say they are problematic ,others say they will bale anything ,while i have also read they struggle to bale haylage, which is mainly what i would want it for and some silage depending on weather change.Thank you

I have found our similar 550 a complete PITA in damp conditions, particularly with a long stem crop. A friend had a slightly later version of the same model with mods to the front mech that feeds and starts the bale and he baled 000s of silage. There was a grass kit available I believe which would help keep the feed roller clean. When it wraps it can be slow and difficult to unblock and drive chains can break very easily.

we only do around 100 bales a year string isnt a problem ,rely on contractors our bales usually end up weter or dryer than i would like,my budget depends on the machine on offer.regards

I would not reccoment a 545 or 550 for anything but straw. I bought one, have it 2 months then changed it for a 590. The 590 was fine in haylage but struggled with silage. Changed that for a 592 which is brilliant in silage, hay, haylage and amazing in straw. My customers compliment me on how tight their silage bales are

JD545 or 550 belt baler makes good tight bales of silage. The problem is that grass sticks to the rollers and builds up on them no matter how clean and shiny they are and no matter how carefully you set the stripper bars.

I found it actually worked better with no stripper bar at all on the belt idler roller at the front as it didn't jam itself solid and I could get my knife in and cut the build up off the roller much more easily. About 20 damp bales would test the limits of my sanity with this machine.

I'd only use the 545 or 550 on dryish material if you have many to do. You will need the rubber strips on the feed roller if doing very dry material, otherwise it won't start a bale but just sits there polishing a wedge banging and clattering.

Later JD models were much better apparently but I've never tried one.
