VW Amarok... (again)

Apologies for another pickup thread... I'm looking to get an early Amarok. Aware of the issue with towing limits on some early ones.

Main question is gearbox - the auto is supposed to be very good but is that the same on the first ones? Whats the MPG difference between the manual and the auto?

The one I get will probably have a decent chunk of mileage on it, anything to look out for? Anyone had an engine go on them?

Thanks

Did the early ones have a five cylinder inline diesel? I think maybe they did. If so, watch out for camshaft failure or engines cheaply repaired after such a failure.
General wear and tear otherwise. Plus rust. Don't assume that because you buy such a thing cheap, that it will be cheap to run, because it might not be. You are talking about old big German cars, so you might be hit by a big German bill if you are unlucky. Its not uncommon for repairs to this kind of thing costing more than the used purchase price. You might get lucky though, so don't worry about it.

I don't think they ever put the ancient 5 cyl in the Amarok, only the 2.0 4cyl. However, I agree whole heartedly with everything you say.

Unloaded vehicle weight of the current ones is more than 2040kg (as is hilux and wildtrak).

They can therefore only legally travel at 50mph on single carriageway, and 60mph on dual carriageway.
