Massey 550 PTO turns constantly while running. Is there a simple way to sort this out?

Does it stop turning when an impletment is connected via pto,
Or is it driving even when a pto shaft is on and lever is in neautral

Hmmm
A few things to check then is lever working under cab between fuel tank
Not in land drive
That about all you can check externally
Warped pack plates
I cant remember where the valve is i think you need side plate off and fuel tank im doing one in next couple of weeks i can let you knkw better then if no body else assits here

Sounds like it's Live drive and PTO clutch is stuck?
could still take it out of gear tho

i would hazard a guess at it being an IPTO model, and the linkage is the problem, look and follow it down from the handle in the cab to where is goes in to the side of the gearbox, it may look all ok, but get someone to move the selector lever with the engine stopped, look and follow it down, and see it is all moving, you may need a mirror to see, (or use the video on your phone on hard to get to or hard to see places) and at the last point there is a pin on the input shaft in to the inside, this pin may be missing or snapped, and lever not turning the shaft, if all that is ok, then its open heart to sort it on inside

What about with a bit of load on it ? Lots of them still turn with like of a fert spinner

Be nice to know if its dual or independent then at least we can offer the correct advice rather than endlessly guessing

I'm doing the 698 PTO brake. Luckily, I can do it through the side plate

Im really not familiar with this modelhave a a MF 2680 with the same problem , just after removing the fuel tank to replace a corroded spool valve pipe and am now tempted to try and fix the PTO issue .......... any thoughts on this before i get a million bolts into plastic tubs

Unless the pto spool isn't disengaging you have warped clutch discs. Tee a gauge into the pto Brake pipe on the top link bracket and Check you have zero pressure when pto disengaged
does it flow from the bracket or down that pipe into the bracket ?
the pto brake is sprung loaded on. when you engage pto, oil flows into the clutch pack to clamp it and to the brake in the top link bracket to release it.
if i was to be really primitave and just slacken that pipe at the top link bracket and not use a guage (dont have one) would it be the case there should be no oil coming out of it when the PTO is disengaged unless the spool is stuck open ?
