canada

Davie, I guess you are taking a trip to Canada in the near future with a view to moving............are you considering any other locations...?
Yes, end of next month if all goes to plan, got my eTA (think the small e is so it's not confused with ETA, the basque rebels) the other day so I'm allowed to fly(y)

I'm not considering anywhere else just now. In fact I'm really just going back to see if the country still feels as much like home as it did 16 years ago.
I've got it made here really... stunning surroundings, a lot of friends around the area, a good market for my beef on my doorstep, got all the equipment I need... A lease on most of the farm till I'm 70 with cheap rent... I've just got a little desire to go back before I'm too old to go for it.

My son has been out there for about 3 months out of a 2 year contract. Loves it, but he hasn't done a winter yet :(:(

I believe they are still looking for 1 more worker.

How is e getting on out there if you don't mind me asking?? I applied for a job with them last year and got it but got a better job back home with more money. Have always been wondering though and they seem to be advertising a lot more?? Made me wonder what staff turnover was like there??? Hope he does well though!!

Would you have got a visa ok?

I assume so. Didn't have any problems when I went out in 2014 and when I gave them all my details etc they said there was no problem. I was just asked to book a ticket and let them know when etc
Hmmmm... Maybe time for a look at some jobs... I applied for a welder/machine operator in the wilds of Manitoba and got it quite a few years ago, I should've gone through with it then when it was easy to leave stuff here.(n)

If i'm honest, I really want to go back now but the girlfriend isn't so keen. She fancies Australia.
I have a thing for the cold though and absolutely loved the winter out there! If I returned though I would do so as a mechanic as they are earning a really decent wage. Would def live in the country though as I'm sure I would return to farming out there after a few yrs!! And I still have a few friends there who are still farming in Alberta.

I had a quick look into setting up a farm out there :nailbiting: $500000 you'd need for Alberta, 325 k for Manitoba.... But if I sold up everything and got good money for it all, threw in the sub cheque and maybe a wee loan... I might just be able to scrape up enough to set up in Nova Scotia...

So if I did go for a shift, I reckon it would be to be a welder fitter out in the sticks, or possibly get in as a farm manager on a cattle place.

Got to go back out for a look first though(y)

Manitoba is probably where I'd head, got connections there from years ago.

I wouldn't mind a few contacts between Calgary and Winnipeg that would be willing to swap a day or two of my labour/welding/bodging skills for a place to stay and a lift from a bus station when I'm out. Best way to get to experience the country is by being with the locals(y)

That's true. I never thought of it that way really.
