Did some OSR for prompt movement and quick payment at £316ex. Also fixed some feed base prices for May 18 at a hundred and fourty something. Think it was £143. The wide consensus is to fix the premiums later. Was offered £118ex for feed barley but only for November so said no.

What premiums are available for some full Group 1 spec Skyfall and Group to Siskin ?

Was told full spec gp1 was making £18 over feed. There are conflicting reports from those who say that full spec gp1 will be rarer than rockinghorse poo come spring, and those who say that there was a *lot* of Skyfall planted and a good slug has hagbergs over 200 which will all be used in mills.

There was a lot of milling planted last autumn, quite a lot by folk who don't grow milling wheat. I know of some sky fall that's perfect, except it's below 11 protein.

Remember if it's a £20 premium and you get a £10 claim it's still £10 better than feed, a pride point often lost in the anger that someone dare take a claim.

There is a fair ammount of quality about, however an even bigger ammount that nearly meets the spec but perhaps falls down on hagberg a bit or protein a bit (again a fairly high pro year) or even a bit low on kghl. With the right premium vs claim structure a lot of this mediocre stuff will end up getting milled. There is also a proportion that is knackered and is feed and some low quality feed at that!

Although milling wheat issues pale into insignificance with the malting barley quality issues, very high N, variable germs and high screenings, maltsters are not usually as helpful as the millers with fallbacks on contracts...... we wait and see.

There's a difference between a £10 claim and 2 lorries on a 7 load contracts coming back from a mill far from the farm. The latter soon makes sending the stuff to a feed mill a cheaper option.

I've got a feeling my malting barley contract fallbacks to feed are going to be excercised this autumn. Your crew down here have been to sample my Siskin & Planet yesterday - my fram trader is keen to get a feel for what the actual quality is like out there. If I can't deliver malting I'd rather start that conversation now than when the first lorries come back rejected from a boat in November!

Malting quality starting to go up here. Merchant said they'd rejected 4 loads this morning because of low germination.

Nov 17 futures finally rising! I've lost a fair bit of money. Should have listened to boss farmer and not the trader who said it would go up to £170! Bought contracts at £149. Duh.

Mine wont. 90% in central store. I wont be getting a single claim. I have some Siskin on my own shed, but if they quibble then I will take the stuff back and send it into Vivergo.

So what is your result if you load 75kg 12.5 pro 230 hag into central store ?
They blend it with better stuff & you get the price for GP1 ? Less storage charges as applicable.

Is low germ weather related though, I thought the only ways were too early with roundup and cooking it in the drier?
